Among other tractor disasters today, the parking brake on my 2910 broke. It was always difficult to engage -- half the time it wouldn't seem to "catch". Now it won't catch at all; the lever just flops up and down, engaging nothing.

Since the ignition key is the extent of my technical tractor knowledge and since I can't get to my dealer until monday, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I may be able to fix the brake. I think its the same parking brake lever contraption that's on all the current B series machines. Maybe it's something simple. Thanks.

Glenn -

Sorry 'bout your parking brake. The TractorByNet brain trust should come up with something soon.

What I want to know, but am almost afraid to ask, is what did you mean "among other tractor disasters today"?

Glenn, I'm sure you got the park brake when you got everything else under there. I'm not sure how to describe it, but look under the floor on that side and there's a "brake lock plate" (flat bar or piece of metal with a bunch of notches in it) that you probably bent, or maybe even broke.

Sounds like the cotter pin came out of the link under the right side of the floor deck look up under the brake pedals..

Bird, kub-mech, thanks, I'll look tomorrow. Actually, the parking brake broke on its own before the brush hogging debacle.

kub-mech,

You were right on target. Missing pin. They didn't have the right size at my dealers so I borrowed one from one of their demo tractors. That seemed like a reasonable interpretation of the warranty replacement policy to me.

It is a funny thing that this happened to you, I have a 2710 with about 10 hrs on it and the same thing happened to me. The clip is gone and the lever just flops up and down, I replaced the hitch pin, everything is now ok...

I've taken to carrying a collection of pins in my tool box for just this reason. I've lost countless clips and pins, and hacking through the jungle as you describe seems to be the worst for parts loss.

I've lost the draw bar clip, brake clip and 3ph snap-pins. Keeping spares has saved me a number of times.

I've also picked up various sticks and branches like you did, but fortunately none did quite as much damage. I did have one wedge in the brake and control linkages and bend the brake rod such that the brake was locked on one side. Backing out of that was interesting.

Another stick nearly skewered the HST oil filter. Through all this I did wonder why the hydraulic lines and other vitals are left so exposed on the underside. If anyone comes up with good shields, please do share it.
