2nd large fluid leak in 6 clock hours!

Could it have been as simple as o-ring failure? When I lived in Alabama I had an upstairs bathroom that backed up to an unheated space, and more than once the small o-ring in a Delta faucet broke when it got cold.

Thanks Twinkle, (or is it Mr. Toes to me?)

I won't say a word about "call me late for dinner". Whoops I just did./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

This is a curious problem. Let us know how it plays out.

Quick update, but no real information....

They came and got my tractor today. With all of our snow, and my inability to clear it out, there was some fun involved with the 1 ton Ford Super Duty and the 5th wheel trailer! But they did pick up the tractor. I dropped by to the dealer at lunch, but they were waiting for the machine to "drip dry" and hadn't started on it.

The head mechanic was upfront that this was not a normal problem and that I was the only one with it. (Lucky me /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif). On a positive note, they were completely dead in the service department and my tractor was the only one there so they told me they will go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Bulletins as they happen...

The cold weather is very possibly the reason for the oil filter gasket blowing out. The oil will thicken up just enough to put too much pressure in the system and the gasket will be the first thing to go. The gasket gets more rigid in the cold combined with thicker oil leads to this problem. In the winter here, we tighten the filter as normal then back up just a tad to prevent the oil bath you described.

Snell,

Right you are, 'cus it's been blowing out! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

The reason why it had done it to me twice is short order may be coming clear. The mechanics at the Kubota dealer found the filter nipple (or nipple adaptor, the person I spoke with wasn't real clear) was not in straight. They have a new part on order and expect it in Wednesday. It sounded like that allows the filter's O-ring to be unloaded on one side more than the other and as Snell said, the higher stress that the cold fluid puts on the system results in a leak.

I don't understand if they will have to machine a bushing into the housing and re-tap threads for the new part or not. But at least they are making progress and happily changing things! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The Tractor is Back!

At the end the day I got a nice surprise /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. My Tractor was sitting behind the house when I got home from work. The part the dealer was waiting for arrived, they changed it and trucked my tractor out to me. My problem was apparently caused by a bent spin on filter nipple for the hydraulic fluid filter. The filter was then sitting slightly cocked and when under pressure the unloaded side blew out. It was sad to have this problem, but reassuring to have gotten this quality of service.

I will see in the morning if it is "really fixed" or not. The weather man is saying -10 to -15 overnight temperature, so it will be the same kind of weather as the last two failures. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

See you in the morning,
John Bud

John,
That must have been a good way to end a work week to arrive home home and see your Kubota park and waiting for you.

I hope today or in the future you won't have write what your son said to you "tractor broken".

Did the dealer mention how this problem could have happen.

Good luck and have a great weekend.

Thomas,

The dealer didn't know exactly how the nipple got crooked. I know I didn't have an impact to it. (whew!) I didn't get to see the bad part, so I am still a bit in the dark. The mechanic did leave a phone message that when it is real cold, to warm the tractor up with the clutch down and to use the hook to keep it down until it's warmed up.

It was -10 or colder this morning. I warmed the tractor up at 1100 rpm for about an hour while I painted the frame for my sprayer project. Then I worked /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif with the FEL for about 1.5 clock hours moving snow from the sides of the driveway and digging out the oily snow from the leak. no problems to report.

Kubota just came out with a new filter that will solve this problem, allegedly, updated filter, new part number. Your dealer should have the bulletin with the new number.

Brought the bulletin home with me, thought I lost it, that's why previous post was a little generic. FOUND IT !!
"To prevent reported HST oil filter leakage, kubota has changed the HST oil filter. The new filter has a higher peak pressure rating with additional reinforcement at the mounting ring. This filter must be used on all L10 hydrostatic transmissions to prevent leakage".

Old filter #32701-37950
New filter #TA240-59900
