Seems like 3/8” is overkill? I’ll have to watch his video again and look over the plans but if you decided to go with 1/4” it’s probably fine. Will 3/8” add about a third to the price, or is it not that simple?
Steel is about $1 per pound, cutting .375 takes a longer so it will cost a little more.

I got my grinder in a box 2.0 kit Polar Bear Forge - GIB ordering page a month or 2 ago. Need to get around to blasting & deburing the plate. Have a gallon of grey Scherwin Williams DTM to paint my lathe stand that got damaged in shopping. Will pain the grinder with it too. Got the bolts, gas spring & other hardware.

Scored a Baldor 3hp 3phase 145 frame motor yesterday. $90 new in the box off Craigslist.

Just need the VFD, wheels & to get off my *** to put it together now. I'll blame the freezing weather to make myself feel better.

Any thoughts on painting the plate before or after I bolt it together?

So I bought a pair of backstand belt grinders on Sunday and I'll go back on Wednesday to pick them up. I think the first one is a direct drive 12 or 14" Baldor wheel grinder that has been converted to a belt grinder. The motor tag is missing, but I'd guess that it's a 5hp unit because it has 20 amp fuses. The other one, is a Hammond ROL buffing lathe that has been converted to a backstand grinder. I'm not sure what the motor hp is, but it's belt driven with the motor inside of the base. I'd guess it's a 3hp because the seller said it was less powerful than the Baldor unit. Due to the foundry dust, none of the tags are readable. I'm guessing they both take 3x132 belts.

I'll probably clean it up and flip one of the machines because I don't need two. I'd like to covert both units to run on 220v 2p power. I need to convert the one that I'll keep because I don't have 3 phase and I want to convert the second one so it's easier to sell. I'm gonna take a look at a 5hp 220v motor over the weekend that might go in the Hammond. I'll probably put a VFD on the Baldor and then keep that one for my own use.

A couple of years ago I bought a 8" 3/4hp 1ph Baldor grinder and it was OK. I then bought a 12" 1hp US Electric grinder and put a VFD on it. Initially, I was kicking myself over my poor choice because at 1hp I thought it would be underpowered. Boy was I wrong. That grinder is 3x more powerful than the 8"! I can still stop the wheels, but I have to be really cranking on a piece of metal to do it. For only a 1/4 hp difference, there must be something with 3 phase power that makes the motor more powerful. For this reason, I'm really looking forward to what these backstand grinders can do.
