3/4" drive socket questions

   / 3/4" drive socket questions #41
I regulate any and all air coming out of my compressor. Most of the time it is set at 85, unless I am painting (almost never) and then I crank the regulator down and remove the automatic oiler.
However, I appreciate and understand your concern. Thanks!!

I bought a 3/4" drive set this summer from my work. KD is the brand. Came with a metal box and a warranty. Bent the slide bar in a curly Q. Broke the breaker once but the new one is holding. Didn't bother replacing the slide bar as I never seem to have room to use it anyway. It hurt the wallet a little but it's been a big help on some repairs I made this year on my machines.

Next on the list is a big impact and some sockets for it.

just my 2 cents - go to flea markets or auctions, cheapest place to get tools (good ones). Sears is currently running sales everyweek on tools. It is also cheaper to buy a set than it is to buy them individually - at stores. At flea markets you can buy the one wrench or socket you need. At alot of auctions, you may have to buy a box of junk to get the two good wrenches in it.

My advice is to buy an extra socket set. Having had things break when you can't afford to have them break is more of a pain than shelling out a few dollars to have a spare set around. You could buy a 1/2 & 3/4. And how many times do you need to use two sockets or a wrench and a socket at the same time. I think its better to be prepared for the worse.

There is more than one reason that chinese tools are cheaper, and its not all labor savings. They can stamp "chrome" or "steel" on an item, and who knows, it may or may not be. It may have a chrome colored paint on it. If it breaks and causes you injury - try going after them. The fraud is unreal, and documented all the time. People just don't care and continue to buy them cause they are cheaper. Not everything made over there is like that, but if the normal set would cost you 100.00 and your paying 29.99, there is a reason.

Climbing off the box now, sorry.

My 3/4 set(well most of a set) is all old stuff that was given to me by my FIL who got it from mechanic buddy cleaning out his truck of the "wore out" stuff. Don't need it real often but when I do it's a lifesaver. Buy quality if your going to use it much, mine has S/K, Proto, and Craftsman in it and no telling how old much of it is. Besides the extra weight of a 3/4 set in the bottom of your rollaway weighs it down and keeps it from tipping over.:D

I've decided to bite the bullet and get myself a 3/4" socket when I see one at a good price.

What is the difference between 6pt and 12pt? Which would be better for working on the tractor / implements etc?

Lots of good responses already so my response is another "me too"

I've got a full sized industrial backhoe/loader and only use 1/2" sockets.

6pt vs 12 pt has been disussed. I don't like 12pt at all and just last week, needed a short 1/2" drive socket to screw some bolts in. I couldn't find my specific socket in 1/2" (I had it in 3/8")

I decided to simply buy another one. I could NOT find it in 6pt but ONLY 12pt. They wanted something like $6.00 for it. I looked over at the impact sockets. They had those in 1/2" drive... hmm... happened to also be 6pt.

So, I bought the entire set of 1/2" drive, 6 pt impact sockets though I was only after a single 1/2" drive, 1/2" 6pt socket. That's how much I try to avoid 12pt (although I DO have some)

Like some of the others, this is also a "me too".

I visit our local flea market every Saturday morning (about 15 acres packed with sellers) just to see what I can find. This market has been here since I was a kid.

About 20 years ago I found a set of Williams sockets with a 6" and 12" extensions, and a really heafty breaker. The sockets started at 7/8" and went up to 2 1/2". When the man asked me 45 bucks for them, I nearly knocked him down trying to give him the money.

Around here the Williams brand carries A lifetime warranty and as much respect and price:eek: as Snap On or Matco. Since they are considered industrial tools, the only place I have found to have them replaced is at a mill and mine supplier about 40 miles away. None of the parts stores handle them.

They have served me well. I more then got my 45 dollars worth out of them.
