Kent I did send away for the catolugue on the link you posted...

Thanks for the info ! :)

Glad to help Scott...

I have no idea what these guys out of Maine want for their timberframes, but it might be worth asking. I think you might be able to save a buck on shipping by buying just the frame, pre-designed, then get all the sheathing and decking locally...

Barn Builder Maine, Horse Barn Construction, Timber Frame Home Builder, New England - Maine Barn Company

They're likely pricey, since these are "mortise & peg" timberframes, instead of big nails, lagbolts, and steel plates...

Just another option.

Bearhawk - If I may be so bold, what is the rough cost of doing your slab. Trying to decide between a slab or a pole building with a poured floor... Boy, the costs of the foundation are high!

If memory serves me, just over $4000 for the site work and the slab back in 200

That was "pre" Tractor :- )

You might want look on the agricultural extension sites like this one for North Dakota - they have all kinds of plans for pole buildings and construction techniques that if nothng else may give you some ideas. I think Louisiana State has a similar site and I have seen a few others

If it says anything about how bad the economy is I've had four contractors approach me just from word of mouth that I wanted to build a barn. I'm waiting for quotes and will post results

Good Evenin Kent,
I got the catalogue in the mail, very nice stuff indeed ! Pricey as you said, but I really liked the 1 1/2 story praire barn. Just to give you an idea it was $30,065 for the 24' by 50' model. Thats the basic barn no insulation etc...

There is an outfit just north of me in Fair Haven, Vt . Dick Walkers' barns and out buildings, that has been of some interest also !

I need this barn/workshop to be both big enough and at the same time affordable !

BTW here is the link, http://www.dickwalkersawmill.com/dwmain.htm

brokermike, have you looked into a local sawmill or put in a Ad for someone who have a portable mill that can mill logs you need? Do you have your trees you can use for lumber? quite often, a miller are always looking for trees and if you have alot, you can make some sort of a traded for lumber you need for your project. This could cut down on your costs.:)

When I built a shed for my father, I built one that is 15 by 20 I think, (it was 15 yrs ago). I used 4X4 PT's and used it like a pole barn style every 4 ft. I went to a local miller and cut lumber for him for a order he needed.( he was short on manpower so i got lucky). When i cut the lumber, i made them in real old time dimensional lumber, 2inch by 12 inch for roof, 2inch by 6 inch for runners for walls between posts. The shed is still standing today and in use and looks like it still have alot of life left.

Thanks all for the links, I have stumbled on a couple of them while internet searching. Neat barn bearhawk, I hadn't considered side doors but they look they provide more useable space then front to back. One ?, does your roof use the wall framing for support? Most of the Gambrel roofs I have seen have a smaller top pitch and more slant on the sides.

I think so, it was an engineered truss so it utilizes all the pieces. I sat with the truss engineer and told him the dimensions of the barn. He asked how much open space and headroom I wanted and that is what the program spit out.

He recommended the foot overhang, and that's what we came up with.

The doors on the front were set up to be able to use it as actual car garage (when) or if we sell the place and the new owners don't have horses.

I am supposed to have the left side as a workshop, but I saw the wife out there with a tape measure thinking she can fit two more stalls in there instead..

I never posted results. i will try to get up some pictures when I get home. I bought all of my lumber from Dick Walker Sawmill and it was about 10k, the metal roofing was expensive, and the concrete was even more expensive. Overall we're very happy

Go buy this one. Looks like a steal to me!

Barn With Horse Stalls

I am sure it really doesn't make sense but $3200 seems like a good deal to me. I don't have the skill (or Energy) to disassemble and rebuild though. Located about 20 miles from my place
