And people just are not paying attention even without distractions.
Early last year I was on the on ramp to get on I40. The on ramp has two lanes, one for north bound traffic and another lane for south bound traffic. North and south bound traffic merge into the east bound lane. Traffic, as usual, for that time of day was backed up on I40. There was JUST enough room that I could have squeezed out into the lane that flows onto I40 but I resisted the temptation. The lane I was in has to merge which is a PITA since the south bound traffic the gets on I40 east fills up the lane. It is good to get out of the merge lane ASAP but I do not do this if the traffic is backed up on the ramp...
Why?
Because the traffic that was heading south and turns onto the east bound ramp drives to fast. The ramp has a curve and has concrete barriers which limit the sight line of cars. Cars cannot easily see if traffic is back up on the ramp.
This morning the traffic was backed up. The light turned green and a little VW drove off as if she was at a drag race. Scat said I, this will be interesting. She came hauling fanny down the ramp and did not start to brake until she was withing a few car lengths of the stopped traffic on the ramp. She crashed into the back of a Jeep after she slammed on the brakes. The Jeep was able to drive off but the VW looked totaled. The VW driver simply was not looking where she was driving. Unreal. I am very glad that I had not squeezed out into that lane since she would have hit me. She just was clueless. Luckily nobody was hurt which was very surprising.
