3 phase machines working on single phase ?

I had to sign a contract with the power company stating I would buy $50,000.00 worth of power in 60 months before I could get 3phase.Rotary phase converters work well just make sure you are using one with enough hp.CNC machines will run on converters but I always dedicated a seperate converter for the 2 I was running at that time.A 2nd converter ran all conventional 3ph mills, saws and lathes.I did notice a web site a while back that is building convertors for CNC up to 100 or so hp.

We built a new home in Dickinson, TX in the early 70's. We were on a street that ran behind the elementary school so that 3 phase lines were already on the poles. Since they had to hang a second transformer to give me 3 phase power I double the standard hook up.

We had 2 - 3 phase air conditioners on that house that ran for 25 years before they failed. I don't know if it helped but I reversed the rotation on the compressors about every two years. External corrosion finally did them in.

I own a small house in town that is zoned for light industrial use, with 3 phase on the pole at the corner of the property and they won't let me have 3 phase power until the house is removed or I agree to quit using the house for residential usage. We pay these people to provide a sevice and they service us as, and if they want...

3 phase welders can and will run good on rotary phase converters. Just remember that you CANNOT get more Amps out of these units than you are supplying to them!
A rotary 3 phase converter can be very simple. Simple as having a 3 phase motor with the motor input wires connected to the driven unit through a plug and starting the converter motor with a rope wound pull start! All of 5 minutes to put together. 1720 delta wound motors work the best and the most common to find cheap. Make sure that it is an industrial duty with ball bearing armature. Welders work best if run at the higher voltage setting and use a multi tap transformer with your rotary converter to balance the leg voltage. Welders will not work with the so called static converters.
Also those old Lincoln and Hobart DC bullet MG welders work flawlessly with a rotary phase unit. They are usually are as cheap to buy as the scrap is price to.

To check if you have three phase at the electric pole; see if you have 3 primary wires on top of the pole; If you do, you have three phase avaiable; if you have 1 primary wire on top of the pole feding the transformer, you only have single phase.
