I am looking to buy a 3 point wood chipper. I am considering the Wallenstein BX42 or BX62. I have a Kubota L3400 tractor. Does the L3400 have enough PTO horsepower to run a BX62 6 inch chipper?
Thanks,
CR

Well, what is the PTO rating of your L3400?
What does the chipper manufacturer recommend as a minimum PTO horse power?

If you can answer those two questions, you'll know if your tractor can handle the chippers you've asked about....

I believe most recommend 7hp per inch of cutting capacity at a minimum. Takes a good deal of power to chip a full six inch log.

I can't answer your question directly but thought you would like to know that I have the Wallenstein 6" unit and it is geat, very pleased!

An email right from Wallenstein:

Hi Brian,

The HP recommendations for the BX42 is, 20-45 HP, the BX62 is 50+ HP.

The difference between the BX40 and the BX42 is:

-Larger rotor diameter 25” BX42 vs 20” BX40

-Fold up hopper, available in self or hydraulic feed hopper

-3 point hitch I match compatible

-4 knives on rotor BX42, 3 knives on BX40

Best regards,

Take a look at the Valby 170. Tractor Chipper

I've had a Valby 140 and now a Valby 160 (same as 170) and they are excellent. Heavy flywheel and 2 sharp knives which shear equate to low hp requirements. The 170 will work with 20 hp. (faster feed with more)

I thought the Jinma does up to 6 inch, and I know of folks using it on tractors of only about 25 hp.

Someone meantioned in here that the hp requirement goes up by the square root of the diameter. Kinda makes sense. I can do 3.5" on about 16 PTO hp. Ratioing this up to 6" on square root returns only 21 hp needed.

What is the cost of one of these units?

Salsco claims only 25hp needed to run their 6" chipper, Patu 20-45 hp, and Valby 20-50 hp. Seach here for chippers and you will find several running a Jinma at lower pto hp.

I want a 6" chipper to run through spruce tops and bushy branches, not to chip 6" logs. HP, along with the material, determines how fast you can feed before bogging down.

If you are not a commercial operator then slowing down for the heavier stuff seems a reasonable alternative to a higher price tractor - unless you need the hp for other uses.

I just got a BX42 chipper with hydraulic feed a few months ago and have used it several times now. My tractor has 25 hp at the PTO. I have been able to overload the engine only twice, once when putting a long (10') and hard piece of oak in that was 4" dia. and then again when I clogged up the chipper from throwing too many small and green fir limbs in at once. Otherwise, anything I throw in (mostly oak) doesn't faze the tractor at all. The nice thing about the chipper opening (not the hopper opening) is that it is 4" by 10" so it will handle forked branches quite well (and the hydraulic feed smashes them up somewhat to begin with). I usually don't chip any single branch or limb bigger than about 3 inches (bigger than that is firewood for me), but I frequently am sending a long large branch through that forks many times. The hydraulic feed with dual rollers really makes feeding stuff like that easy compared to a self feed unit. I will say that if I had the BX62 I would probably use it the same way (which would not overload the tractor) however, I would be able to throw in even wider forked branches, etc. I'm plenty happy with the 42 though. You can order it in orange too.
