Snow 3 point hitch mount vs front snow blower mount

/ 3 point hitch mount vs front snow blower mount #21
I’ve only used front end blowers, one on a 3 speed geared tractor (without a creeper gear) and one on a hydrostatic. Night and day. Geared tractor was terrible, took a lot of thinking and clutching. Always the wrong PTO speed - ground speed mismatch. Luckily it wasn’t a live PTO operated from the same transmission clutch or it would of been worse.
On big storms you’d be too fast and a lot of clutching (on the first pass), or only taking a partial “bite” on subsequent passes as to not overload the blower.
On small storms you’d either be too slow in one gear or too fast in another.
I do have a 8’ plow blade on my gear tractor 3 point hitch. Not a problem to look back and speed is easy to control as I don’t have to worry about engine rpms like a snowblower.

And on a “you don’t want to hear this” note: If you have problems rotating your neck to look back, the answer isn’t expensive equipment so you don’t have to rotate your neck. There’s a lot of good YouTube videos that will put you on path to fix the real problem.

Thanks for your help. I don't however, understand what my "real" problem is.

I wouldn稚 even consider a rear blower, nor would I consider a tractor without a cab for blowing snow.

Not sure how a pull blower would work on a compact tractor in a 24 snowfall. Seems like a recipe for disaster.

It's pretty easy actually.

You blow the snow as it's falling if a large storm is predicted. Same way I've been moving snow for every storm for the past 40+ years.

Would you wait for 24" of snow to fall before you warmed up the truck and got started??

What someone uses, really has nothing to do with what someone else uses. Everyone's driveway and snow conditions are going to be different. The equipment you get should consider what you will have to deal with rather than what someone else is doing or what someone else thinks is best.

Thanks. Great insight and good advice..

ruko I like to solve a problem with the least expenditure as possible. For me that meant a homemade snow pusher coupled with a rear scraper blade.
It works for me. My drive is 1/10th as long as yours however and the time I plowed out a gun clubs 1/4 mile long driveway, my combo was a pain in the neck to continue to operate with a 14" snow dump.
In your snow shoes, I wouldn't even consider an attachment where I have to use mirrors or a camera or a neck swivel to do the work in front of me.
Yes, you would be able to go backward the entire length of your drive simply looking back. The question becomes "how many times" would you be willing to do this?

Save yourself a lot of future hassle (I should have taken my advice as well in my past) and spend the money to get what you want. A thousand extra bucks becomes pittance to be able to do a job comfortably over and over again.
Learning lessons the hard way tends to be more expensive in the long run because after you've spent the money to solve it to one's way of thinking, you soon learn how you should have solved it in the first place.
It is unfortunate how much money I've spent on the sub-standard solve and then have had to spend additionally on the definitive solve.

Knowing what I know now after tractoring at my place for 40 years and dealing with snow dumps over two feet occasionally, I'd follow the advice given about the rear pull along blower.

Didn’t mean to imply it’s “your” problem per se.
If someone can’t rotate their neck, that’s the real problem. Back up cameras and front end snowblowers treat the symptom but not the cause.

I've got a fused C1 and C2 so turning my neck is an issue for sure. I'm considering a rear snowblower for my next tractor anyway. Here's the reasons why I'll be going with a rear unit. I have not looked into the pull rear blowers yet.
1) My driveway and road have some ups and downs that a blower hanging 6' or more off the front would be a problem digging in.
2) Mirrors and a backup camera take care of most of the turning around in the seat.
3) It's be nice to be able to use the front bucket all year.
4) Simple hook up and removal.
5) Much less expensive.
