Virtually all tractors in this size range have a single acting 3 point hitch- power up and gravity down. There is usually a draft control, probably under the seat that controls how much "float" your lift arms have. If you had down pressure on your 3 point you would just unload your rear tires and reduce your traction.

I wondered what that lever was for under my seat. Now, if you will, explain what it means when you say "controls how much float your arms will have?" Is that speed down or distance down or what? thanks, bw

I'm sure there are others in this forum that could explain it much better than I, but here goes: When your draft control is loosened all the way if you pull up on your lift arms they will come up easily. If you are pulling a ground engaging implement it will have a tendency to "float" with the contours of the ground. If you tighten it up the lift arms will stay in one place and resist any upward force placed on them. If I am missing something someone please chime in and set me straight! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

It is my understanding that draft control is linked to the top link of the 3ph. When using a ground engaging implement it senses the pressure on the top link caused by the implement digging in to deep (due to differences in soil consistancy, moisture, etc.) and will raise the implement slightly to maintain the desired depth. It will also help prevent digging the implement in and stopping the tractor.

I think, but I could be mistaken, that you guys are refering to the speed control of the 3ph raise/lower.

now I am confusted .. I have a lever nect to the lever for the pto lift arms that I was told was the draft control and that you need a impliment that uses draft control?. and the vlve under the seat is actually the rate of flow for the hydo fluid. which will make 3pt impl. raise fast or slow. I'm not sure about lowering say a grader blade and closing valve will keep pressure on blade and not let it float.. will try it out soon as it will make some of the gradeing of draive easier

Most tractor setups witht the valve under the seat, only controlls the down speed of the 3pt hitch. Locking that lever down , should not let the impliment lower any further ( may leak down ) but probably will not 'lock ' it in that position.. you could probably manually lift the implimint even with the valve shut.
