They've been around for years. see attached for one 50 years ago.

I have been using a 3pt 'arch' for 35+ years on the 3pt with logging tongs, and now use my iMatch top hook and toss the logging tongs on there. Easy to drop the ballast box, and throw on the tongs, and I'm set to go.
I don't like the boom idea, as my iMatch gets a log up enough so the weight is on the tractor wheels, and a boom would just mean a log could be raised higher, but to no additional advantage. Dis-advantage would be that the front end would need more weight to compensate for the boom length.

/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifI have a "ballast bar" that goes on my 3pth. I load some cast weights on it as needed and it also has a receiver for a draw bar so i made up another draw bar with chain slots in it for skidding. It is longer than a normal bar and has an upward tilt so it will lift the logs off the ground. I am also working on a small (2ton)electric winch that will mount on it to get the smaller logs over to the tractor instead of having to back and reconnect the main chain 3 or 4 times when hauling out of a tight spot. Most of my wood is under 14" at the butt and I have some wicked turns so I can only haul 20' long max. Just remember to add some chain storage to whatever you build... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Got me a "Store Bought One" might give you a few ideas.

penokee,
You just want to show off that "square chain" again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So, where'd you get the "store bought one"?

I made one out of a carry all, with the arms cut off so just the U was left. Then I took the beam from a horse drawn plow and hooked it to the upper link position on the tractor. Welded a bar with mulitple holes on the bottom of the beam, to vary the position of the chain that held the tongs. If I had a good sized log on there I had to put all my long chains in the ammo box bolted to the front bumper to hold the front end down. I was usin' the three point hitch the opposite way from that intended. You need to push on the top link not pull on it. I'm tryin' to figure out how to make it a towed implement now. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Could you post a picture of that 'skidder'? Sounds very interesting.

Here's one I made from a baler part ( the needles frame/bracket). For the amount of use it gets, I figured tongs were more work than they were worth..
The chain goes from the drawbar over the frame, around the log and back to the frame. There is a second chain hooked from the drawbar to the bottom of the log (actually the first chain). The second chain is necessary or else on a big log the tractor just rears up, rotating out from under the log.
