wanting to build a 3 pt boom for my little 3200. Should I just buy a good quality 10' stick of 2" black iron and have it bent into a 45 at about 2'X8'? How much length will I loose by benging the pipe?

Anyone have any good schematics or drawings or even better close pu pix with some good explinations of stock used?

thanks in advance.

Are you doing this project for the pleasure of working the metal or to save money on buying a boom? I ask because lately I have been seeing booms on craigslist in my area from $65 - $125. I can't think you could save much by building your own after buying the steel.

Black iron is really the wrong material for this project. Steel would be much better, with a gusset reinforcing any bends.

As earlier poster mentioned, you can likely purchase this complete for less than the cost of individual components.

Here are a few pics of a store built one, one (yellow)I built here in my shop, for my 601 workmaster. I use it on my tc30 also, it works great.

Grunt, your pictures raise a few questions. How did you bend that square tubing? The angle of the tube seems greater than the 45 degrees most booms have. If it is, did you do that to get a higher maximum lift?

Thats the angle it was when I picked up some scrap from a guy that did carports.I slid a piece incide to make it stronger.Thats a good soarse for sq.tubing. I think the bend I have will make it stronger at that point.Higher lift is allways a good thing.I mounted mine in my front end bucket a set trusses , also set.

I used 2" used black iron pipe. You can not bend it good, so I used sch 40 tees and elbows , threaded the pipes, put them together and socket welded the fitting for good measure. Did not use socket weld fittings but welded threaded fittings. I have used it a bunch and yet to fail. I later added a stiffener uni-strut as I had a bit of flexture lifting really heavy stuff.
