3 pt carrier for firewood/large items?

Tom,

A true set of 3 pt forks are much sturdier than a carry-all frame. Those frames are designed to have the decks attached, not simply riding. I think Snoho made the right choice.

I cobbled this up in 30min or less...in the winter I throw a couple of cinder blocks on for added weight.

It just slides on and off and the hidden end is slotted so it fits deep. One day I just got tired if keeping stuff in the bucket.

...just say'en the pic doesn't do justice for all that it will hold.

Yup...this is for the guy on a budget...if anyone's interested I can post a few more pics so you can make one up real quick.

Edit to add

Tom H I like that King Cutter model. It's inexpensive...and with that simple frame you can do what you have to do to make it work for you.

I am not positive, but I think the link below shows what you are talking about. This thing is obviously much sturdier than most carry-alls. The following questions come to mind. Would you mind giving your thoughts?

1. This thing looks like it would lift several tons, or at least far more than a B7800 could lift at the 3ph (I checked his profile). I am not sure how it would be necessary to have such heavy duty forks when the 3ph has far less lift capacity than the forks. Am I right in concluding that you do not think this is overkill? I'd be glad to know your take.

2. It seems the cost for these forks would be far more expensive than the carry-all. With the lift capacity of the 3ph being less than the forks, why would the cost be justifiable?

3. You stated that the frame is designed to have the decks attached. On the photo in this link, I don't see any place for that to be done. I might be missing something, or perhaps this one is not like yours. Could you elaborate please?

4. I don't see how the multi-position anchor for the top link would help. The forks need to go straight into the slats of a pallat. I can see how having a hydraulic top link would be helpful in order to tilt back after lifting, however (like a fork lift). Any thoughts?

Thanks Jeff

Tom,

This is the one I have:

King Kutter Incorporated

The price is not much different than a carry-all frame. If I remember right, it was just a little more. The capacity is just about exactly the 3 pt lift capacity of my JD 4410.

From the King Kutter website on their carry-all: "...with pre-punched holes which readily accept plywood or plank limber to create a working platform. " It also states the carrying capacity is 1000 pounds...half that of the pallet mover.

You're right. I should have mentioned that a hydraulic top link makes a set of rear pallet forks much, much easier to use. That multi-position top connector would be a royal pain. But, that doesn't change whether you're using a set of rear forks or using a carry-all frame as a set of rear forks.

Hi Jeff,

Now I can see why you'd want to use that particular item. I have to say though that what they're calling a "pallat mover" looks to be a heavier duty model of what they call a "carry-all". Earlier you mentioned that he should get "pallat forks". To me, "forks" denotes that high tempered steel on most fork lifts, thick at the rear and tapering towards the front, very high strength and with flex, able to lift 2-5 tons. Instead of the angle iron like King Kutter has on both their "carry-all" and their "pallat mover", the forks on that set of Gillison's "Three-point hitch Forks" look to be tempered steel that is tapered like true forks. I imagine that one is a pretty penny more than either King Kutter model.

I know that all this is semantics to some degree. Some "carry-alls" only carry 300 or so lbs. I think the KK model at a half ton may be around the 3ph lift capacity of a Kubota B7800, but I will easily agree with you that a few bucks more for what they call the "pallat mover" would be worth it, especially for you with a 3ph that can lift a ton. I would love to know what that Gillison's model costs; they didn't give online prices. Nevertheless, my instincts tell me that their "forks" would be overkill in both capacity and price for the little 'Bota.

BTW, that Gillisons had some very interesting attachments: hedge clippers that will trim the top of two 20' or so tall hedges-simultaneously on each side of the tractor, a hedger that looks to trim the tops of pecan trees @ around 35'. A cool tree/log grapple for dragging logs out of the woods, and a lot more. Have a look:

Thanks for the reply Jeff.

Carry Alls are great. Have stake holders where you can tote garden goodies (lots of pumpkins, taters, corn, etc..). I've toted firewood, washer/dryer, TVs, stuff, rocks, you name it. A great MUST HAVE tool for a tractor.

The problem with all of these is you can't load dirt or gravel on any of them with the FEL

Lee,

Even if it could hold dirt, there is no way to load dirt into it with the FEL, not with the FEL of the same tractor at least. Now in your case, you could use the 23 to load the 1500's. The only other alternatives are to detatch, load, reattach, travel, etc. which is not very efficient. Loading a trailer with at least 2 axles, then towing it would be more effective. Using a pond scoop on the 3ph will allow the movement of some dirt, but less than the FEL, so that is pointless. A box blade allows the transport of some soil, but it has to be a continual rip and drag process. There are some really small pan scrapers (quarter yard to 1 yard) that can be towed behind a full sized utility tractor that will allow soil to be scraped then transported, but the volume is not much more than a FEL would hold on the same tractor.

For transporting soil, this trailer would be a good fit for a CUT or SCUT:

1600 Utility ATV Wagon - Power Dump Cart, dumping ATV Trailer- Power RAM strongest, best, ultimate atv farm trailer, atv ranch trailer

The first pic on the right side of this page shows a little pan scraper (described as a "carry-all"):

The Crispin Company - Houston, Texas

These obviously are not the kind of item the OP inquired about, but L.B. brought up the ability to transport dirt, and these are some options.

Note re. that last link: One of my neighbors has the unit that is second down on the right, and he calls it a carry-all. When I was a kid, these were called earth movers. A tracked vehicle (bladeless bulldozer) pulls the pan. There is a push point on the back where another dozer with a pusher that looks like a really narrow blade can give extra force in hard packed soil. It is pretty rare to see these things now, because paddlewheel scrapers dig faster and transport much faster with their 2 wheel rubber tire tractors.

OK Garpoonga here's a little more on the field expedient quick mount/dismounting 3PH carry-all. The over all length 28" and it's as wide as the 3PH towing cross bar.

With the 3PH level and the carry-all pulled out below you see the tapered end of the plywood that slides into those 2 vertical slots. Cut the slots 5" deep or to fit.

the next pic shows what the carrier looks like pulled out with the 3PH level for show and tell purposes.

The only important detail with this 30 min project is make sure the 3PH is all the way up when you make marks for mounting the 2x4 or 2x6 that's closest to the seat. Because this carrier is all the way up 90% of the time.

Underneath the carry-all I have a 6' logging chain wrapped around the ears of the 3PH...it's easy to lift the back end of the carry to get to it...and like I said this is less than a 30 second off/on.

In the summer sometimes I'll put one of those plastic milk crates in the carry all...

...other times during the summer I can carry many long and short handled tools standing up in that box. To do that I lash a couple of furring strips across the back of the ROPS and with the aid of a couple of bungee cords they stay put...

...crude but effective.

I use to carry things in the bucket but the as the knees gave out I got desperate and cobbled this us...saves me many a mount/dismount.

This Kubota has a woods 72" rear cutting deck that's so sweet I have no problem putting it on one day and taking it off the next. And that's exactly what I do cause I never take the cutting deck into the woods.

We cut a little less than 5 acres but I mostly never cut it all at once. Like a golf course we cut every day...but I only cut for 30-35 minutes or so it doesn't become a drudge type of chore. When the deck comes off the carry all goes on.

Sorry for the long winded post.
