I got me a (old) new shredder and need to shorten the 3 pt driveshaft, How much overlap should you have at the lower operating position so the shaft won't be too long in the raised position?

JimC, the short answer is to have a minimum of 6" overlap at the point of greatest extension and have the overlap 3" short of the u-joint at the point of least extension. However what I would suggest is that you go to Bush Hog and scroll down to page 9 and read the instructions complete with pictures.

With the Implement on the ground AND attached to the tractor(3pt or drawbar),The"Fullycollapsed/telescoped to its whole lenth " driveshaft should just clear the PTO splined power shaft on the tractor. It will extend only 2 -3 inches to fit and lockon the power shaft. The driveshaft gets longer and telescopes out when you lift the implement off the ground . You should leave plenty of innershaft to be safe

Thanks to both of you guys, The Bush Hog manual is real clear and the additional info on setting the length with the shaft in its collapsed positionand the implement raised makes it so clear and simple that I don't think I can mess it up in anyway.
Love this TBN wedsite.

Some specialty shafts allow 3" overlap. We typically see these shafts used in chipper applications but I have seen them used in some other applications.
