What do you think of this?

Seems like a good deal compared to this. Granted, the Northern Tool one looks like it's a lot better built, but I think I could buy the less expensive one and weld on a 2" receiver and be all set for moving a few lightweight trailers (<3000 lbs unloaded) around the yard.

What do you think?

If that is all your thinking of doing with it, then I would agree it should work fine. Probably wouldn't even need to put a 2" receiver on it just put the ball on as it would be cheaper. I made one more like the one in Northern, but am thinking about welding a 2" receiver tube on the loader to move the trailers easier.

Problem with mine is that every time I want to move the trailer it is because I want to mow. Well most of the time I mow I have the bagger on the back so I can't use the receiver. The FEL is easier to put on and off than the bagger!

You could buy the $59 one off of eBay and then go to Tractor Supply and buy just the receiver tube and weld it to the $59 hitch. The receiver tubes are usually about $30 I think.

The set-up you're looking is similar to mine. Instead of a receiver, I just pin the hitch to the frame. Besides the 2" ball, there are a couple other hitches I use. Like using a receiver, this system makes it easy to switch out hitches. Some drilling and welding required.

I asked the metal shop guy at our high school vocational center to make me one similar to the Northern one (gave him a picture to look at). His kids whipped one up in one class session for $20...the cost of their stock. I picked up the pins needed at local Agway store...so I figure I got one just as functional (and I painted it 'orange') for about $35.
I was so impressed I enrolled in an adult education welding class there and would now weld it up myself. But for those who do not weld, your local high school might be a source to get things done. Teachers are always looking for projects for their kids...and the price is usually right.

I got one off Ebay a year or so ago under $100 including the shipping with the receiver tube. I move around a 4X8 utility trailer with a small ball and also my 24' camper with a large ball. I can't ever remember ball sizes...ping pong, golf, 8 ball, baseball, softball, basketball.
Anyway, if you tote a trailer around these things are as handy as a pocket on a shirt....and I never wear those ...hmmm.

I've seen that unit from Northern Tool before and always shook my head at the ridiculously high price of $200. Especially when compared to other 3PH offerings. 200 bucks for 31 pounds of steel and not that much fabrication work compared to the 73 pound ATV 3-Point Box Scraper at $180 that requires a lot more fabrication time.

I hate to say it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.... but I bought one of those $200 units from Northern Tool... it's actually one of the best investments I've made. It's extremely heavy duty. I actually don't have a drag bar on my tractor... so I've used this instead to pull down trees and stuff. I'm always using my tractor (MF135) with 5x10 utility trailer for hay rides in the neighborhood and with this unit I don't worry about it's strength. I also ride my 4 dogs around in the trailer on the property.... they love it! Depends on what you want to do with it.

If you go to WeekendFreedomMachines.org and search for member Afzimm. I think you will find one of the best. He builds them to order, a lot of cat 0 but will build just about any thing you want. He puts the reciever on or a brinley adattor and will even add a weight bar for suitcase weights if you want. Occasionally he sells them on eBay as well. WFM is a great site for the older John Deere Garden tractors and a great group to help when you need it.

I think this would do all you need it to if you have a receiver hitch already or go buy one cheaply to add to this. If you have a straight drawbar coming out the back of your tractor. And the price is very good. I bought pallet forks from this guy and they are very good. John
