I am looking at splitter to attached to my 3 pt hitch. I see there is PTO and Hydrualic available. This looks a lot handier that a stand alone unit you drag around on wheels. Why by a honda motor when you can run it off the hydraulics?
Verticle vs horizontal ? or get one that does both? My PTO does 12 gal/min so I assume I need to keep this in mind when purchasing.

You are in the same place as I am.

I too don't want another engine to maintain much less break. I really like the 3-pt PTO log splitter concept but almost no SCUTs and few CUTs have enough GPM at a high enough pressure to *really* make cycle times as good as a stand alone splitter even at high RPMs. Using a PTO powered external hydraulic system is one very effective way to get fast cycle times, very good splitter power even at lower engine RPMs and it's the method I am working on for our B2410.

I have chosen a vertical type for us, we have some logs 36" in diameter and larger that we simply could not lift onto a horizontal splitter. Since we live in a "warm" climate, the amount of splitting we do is limited compared to those who heat with wood up north, so investing in a splitting table and such is not needed for us.

I have a 3ph log splitter from T.S.C. I hook it to my Mahindra 2810. It is Horizontal or Vertical. It has split everything I have put on it, even Beech. Your 12 gallon per min. will be more than enough to use it. Mine works plenty fast enough for Me, and I dont have to have a 3600 rpm Engine screaming at Me.

I was in the same boat last year - REALLY didn't want another engine to maintain. However, as I get older, I also don't want to heft logs onto the splitter. So, I bought a stand-alone and can use the tractor loader to carry and feed the large pieces of wood. WAY easier on the back.

msukegrat,

The GPM, determines the speed of the splitting action, unless you get a regen valve. The regen will go fast up to the log, and then pull the lever back for the power stroke. There are other valves out there, that are auto, after setting the levers. You push both levers fwd, and the splitter splits the wood and returns with no action on your part.

12 GPM's will put you at the high end equal to a 28 GPM two stage pumps.

4 in cyl, 2 in shaft, and 2500 psi will give you about 15 ton of splitting force.

I use a 3pt setup on my JD 855, which has a 5.6 gpm pump and only about 2000 psi. I use a 4x16 inch cylinder, and the cycle times are a bit slow complared to my brothers stand alone unit from TSC with an 11 gpm pump. However, by the time I walk to the fallen tree, get the block of wood, and return; the splitter is always in the ready position. 15 secs to extend, 15 secs to retract. 11 gpm is a bit fast in my opinion. I like having all my fingers.

As for the horiz/vert option, I stayed with the horizontal, but lower my 3pt to the ground for the big blocks. That way I just roll them to the splitter, roll them on, and split them. But the majority of them are split with the work done at waist height.

What splitter did you purchase? Currently looking at a 20 ton...

I built my own splitter because I could not find what I wanted and have no problem running it with my Jinma 254/284. It has plenty of power and will split anything I can throw at it at only 1,200 rpm or so on the tractor.

Diamondpilot,

What is the gpm and psi your Jinma is operating at?

I know its 2400 PSI because I added a gauge on the output side of my pump. I am not so sure about the flow but I think its 5. I will try to look for ya.
