My needs for a tractor seem to be a bit different then yours. I'm sure a box blade would come in handy but the TNT would be an expense that wouldn't be necessary...at least not for my existing needs.

Before I got my B7800 I use to drive my 4x4 up my hillside, buck my maple logs with my Husky chainsaw, fill up my wheelbarrow, wheel it to the truck and throw them in the back of the truck, drive back to my wood shed, get in the bed and throw the logs out and then split them with my maul.

Now I drive my tractor up the hill with my chainsaw/gas/water etc., on my carry-all, pull the logs out with my sling choker hooked to the drawbar, cut the maple logs into 4 to 6 foot lenghts and then pick them up with the bucket/grapple as well as the carry-all and then bring them intact to the wood shed where I buck and then split them. A whole lot easier, more efficient and cleaner for the logs. Some day when I am too old to swing the maul I will buy a 3 pt or gas wood splitter.

Here's how I spent my day-see pictures

ronjhall-do you fill the box with sand? What does it weigh? 350 lbs or so?

With having a box blade as well as the rear blade do you use the box blade mostly? I am considering buying one at TSC in the MI UP
Filled the box with 5 80lbs bags of Quickcrete. Box weighs almost 500lbs.
I use my landscape rake more than the RB or BB. Seems to work best with my property. Here is a link to photos of some of my attachments. TBN Photo's

You've got some nice setups. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I would go with the box blade myself, but if you live in an area where you will be moving snow, I would think about a good (Woods or Landpride) rearblade. Your profile didn't indicate your location. Good RB.... 500 bucks.

Just to put my 2 cents worth in, I have used a 3 pt rake, blade, box blade and a large LP 1872 brush mower as counter weight on my GL3130 for when I do a lot of FEL and fork work. I did not like using them because they were either too light (300 to 500 lbs) or they just made turning a bear ( with mower).

I move a lot of hay bales for my horses, both standard 3 string weighing 120 - 140 lbs ea with eight on a pallet, to large 3' x4' x8' bales weighing around 950 to 1200 lbs ea. I ended up buying a weigh box from Kubota and filled it with 900 lbs of sand (12 bags at 75lbs each) and what a difference it made.

The close coupling of the box tends to put more weigh near the rear axel for traction as well as allowing me more manouverability.

This, of course works in my situation and may be different for others.

Good advice everyone. I purchased a BB with my tractor after reading these responses because of the weight and manuverability. I put 10 bags of 50lb stone in the box and it seems to work well. I didn't do a lot of work with the FEL except for moving stumps that were dug out of the ground. Some of the stumps were fairly big and I had to cut them up and pressure wask some of the dirt from the roots. Since I'm new at using a FEL it's hard to judge what may be too heavy to lift. 'm currently using the rule of thumb (if i can physically move the object just a little) it's not too heavy to lift. Also, if i don't feel the rear end of the tractor try to lift off the ground it's probably not too heavy.

Does anyone with experience with using the FEL have another way of determining if they are overloading the FEL?

thanks for your advice,

Yes - when you pull on the joystick and nothing happens :D
I haven't managed to stuff anything in the (60") bucket yet that the FEL couldn't lift, so I think that's generally the case unless you've got a stockpile of Plutonium (I hope not).

By the way, BB more commonly means "Box Blade" to most folks... just one of those multiple-use acronyms, though it's obvious from the context of your post which you bought.
