It's way too small to apply power to the 3 pt. system. It must be there to sense to the position, prehaps to limit the travel?

I'd love to see a pic of the broken part.
Does your tractor have both position & - doggoneit, can't think of the other settig, for plowing & heavy draft pulls - for the 3pt? Some Fords have that. Oh, duh, it's position & draft control. Perhaps that linkage is for draft sensing?
Anyhow, stop using the hitch the way you are. Slamming the 3pt up is a sure way to break things. Likely that is how the current breakage happened. Next the internal cylinder will pull apart. Not good.
1. Use the real drawbar, bolt a ball on it as someone suggested. By far the best way to go.
2. Chain the 3pt down to the real drawbar to limit travel.
3. build a sturdy brace from the end of the 3pt arms to the top 3pt bracket - old ford N tractors had this brace, perhaps you can adapt the brackets which come from TSC, etc.
Don't keep slamming, that is bad for the tractor, & for trying to control the tractor on a hill!

HeavyToy, it sounds to me like you might have the optional draft control system on your tractor. I don't have the option, but my manual shows one and it seems to be what you are discribing. The draft control system senses the load on the 3PH and lifts the plow to maintain a constant load. This is designed to keep a plow at a constant depth that position control alone cannot maintain.
As Rambler stated, the common way to rig a fixed drawbar on older tractors is shown in my attachement. If you put those bars between the lower arm pins and the toplink pin, just be cautious that you don't try to lift the 3PH. If your hydraulics have enough power, it will bend the bars. Notice in my picture that they are slightly bent. The same goes if you chain your drawbar down. These brackets are available at TSC.
Also notice the blue bracket that keeps the drawbar from rotating. This will keep your trailer hitch from being damaged if the drawbar rotates. That's also a common thing on these old drawbars that were really not designed for a ball. Old trailers had a split tongue that fit over and under the drawbar and you just dropped a pin through. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Could he be talking about the 3-point limit adjustement assembly. L-shaped bracket and threaded rod going into the control valve?

I'm pretty sure he would have the same fixed drawbar that I have, already on his machine. It can swing side to side a little bit, or you can fix it in the center. I use it all the time for trailers. You could use it with, or with out the ball depending on the trailer hitch type.

I had forgotten, but I had to make a slight adjustment on my tractor because if I raised the lift control all the way to the top of the slot, I could hear my tractor start to load up. HeavyToy should be very careful to not move his lift control into that position until his sensing linkage is repaired and adjusted properly.

I went to our local tractor mechanic's facility to order the part. We got on the phone with NH parts department so that I could describe the part to NH. They faxed an exploded view of the mechanism Labeled "05D01 Control Valve, Quadrant & Linkage L/Draft Control" to us and I identified the part item number for them. There was a debate within the office as to whether the linkage was for position limit sensor or for draft control (50/50). The NH parts person could not identify its purpose either.
I am somewhat convinced that it is for position control as I would assume that the user would make the desired adjustment of the nuts and then leave it alone. Regarding the Draft Control, I am unable to find a lever of any size or description that would/could engage/disengage the draft control function. Can anyone explain the drawing title if it is not of the draft control? Where would the lever be located? There is only one lever on the right side, for raising and lowering the lift, but there are two more slots with nothing in them.
Anyone with any ideas?

The complete parts page title is 05D01 Control Valve, Quadrant & Linkage <font color="red"> Less </font> /Draft Control. The parts you are trying to identify are parts of the hitch valve follow-up linkage (my term). It is imperative this be repaired and adjusted properly to protect your hydraulic pump.
