Hi J_J sir,

I am building one log splitter of 20 ton capacity.

I am selecting components needed for that.

please guide me.I am new to hydraulics.i am going through formulas in surplus center.

How much HP engine is needed,what dia. of cylinder is needed.Pump sizing.

Please tell about,how to build a hydraulic system for log splitter of capacity 20 tons.

8 HP engine

4 in cyl 2 in shaft, 3000 psi = 37,699 lbs, or 18.84 ton

4.5 in cyl 2 in shaft----------=47,713 lbs, or 23,25 ton

If you want a 3pt log splitter, leave off the engine and pump.

Tractor hyd will supply hyd power.

Thank you sir,

The 4 inch. cylinder have area of 3.14*4*4/4 gives 12.56 square inch.

The required force is 20tons gives 44000 lbs of force.

so the pressure setting is 3503.15 pounds per square inch.(am i correct sir?)

16 gpm flow is required by the pump.is it over all flow of the circuit?

gpm*psi/1714 gives the required horse power to drive the pump.

(16*3503)/1714 gives 32.17 hp?? (please correct me here)

How to decide the flow .i.e. total flow required by the system?

i am calculating total volume of fluid in each part of circuit or how to calculate GPM of pump.

i am confusing ,please guide.

GPM's determine the speed of operation, and pressure determines the torque.

If you have a 10 GPM pump the pump will try and pump 10 GPM. Your valve will determine the amount of fluid you send to the cyl .

Most hyd pump are rated to about 3000, and a few hyd pump will go to 3500 psi or greater.

Log splitter pressure usually are in the range of 2500 to 3000 psi.

You will only have pressure when there is resistance to the force of the pump flow.

Most hyd systems will have a relief pressure that will protect the pump, and should the pressure rise to the relief setting, the pressure will be relieved to tank.
