I am selling my 504 Int'l and am looking at/pricing a 3010. I would appreciate opinions on tire choice, ag or r4. I live on 60 acres, 25 farmed (by others). I move snow, harvest firewood, light grading/clearing, pick up rocks. Eventually will buy brush hog for keeping edge of fields clean. I run across tilled ground quite a bit . I intend to purchase fel with tractor. Any insights opinions appreciated!

Chuck -- First off, welcome aboard! I live in the Green Mountains of Northern Vermont, move plenty of snow and harvest all my own firewood, pick up and transport stone to rebuild my walls, etc. My L3010, Clementine, wears Aggies and wouldn't have it any other way. Of course others will disagree, but having tried R4s on my neighbor's tractor, here, given the condition of my land, there is no alternative. His R4s just loaded with mud and spun. My Ags don't.

There was a thread a while back called "The Ag Elimination Rule." Search for it and you'll find a great discussion. The 3010 is a nice tractor!

Welcome to the group, you'll find it a wealth of information and "get to know" a great group of people.
You can probably find most of the answers to your questions using the search function at the top of every page. I went with ags with my 3010. From the research I did on this group, I figured that the extra traction was what I needed. While I don't have a FEL, my list of chores is similar to yours with the addition of finish mowing. I have been very happy with the ags. They don't tear up the yard unless I pull up stupid and leave it in 4WD and make tight turns or when its wet.

A couple of tips about the group:
1. Your question is mainly about tires - write a subject line that reflect that. I only read it because I have a 3010.
2. Several of the guys will suggest that you put a little more information in your user profile if you are comfortable with that (Some people are not and its no big deal either way). It some times help to answer a question if we know a little bit more about your particular situation. If you haven't figured it out, You can access user information (profile) by clicking on the username.

Boondox is wrong/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif - the L3010 is a GREAT tractor!

Chuck,

Welcome aboard! Try not to get swamped with information as this board is chock full of great advice.

One drawback to ags (as sold by Kubota) is that they are only 2 ply. I do most of my work in forrest areas and on stubble from bush hogging and I was afraid that the ags would be more prone to flats. (So I got R4's). The R4's do fill up with mud pretty easy, but I have only been stuck when there was pure mud soup and the FEL couldn't help at all. I think you can get ag tires with more ply's than 2, but I didn't know enough to check when I was buying. Might be worth looking into.

As to the Kubota Grand L's, they are very nice, especially with the Hydro transmision. Very smooth and powerful. I went one "up" to the L3410, but the typical limitation is traction and not power. After 1 year, I would still buy Kubota over the competition. When you start to harvest wood, look up some of the discussions on logging winches. Boondox has one with his tractor and it sounds like the slick setup!

Best of luck!

Chuck, great choice, I highly reccomend the L3010 with ag's and an FEL. We use ours for everything from trash duty to yard duty. As far as the ag tires I have only seen problems in the yard when it's really wet and those footprint will go away within a few days. My neighbor has the r-4's on his 3010 and constantly spins when there is any water or dew on the grass.

Hey Chuck - no better way to beat the winter blahs than to be looking at tractors !!

The 3010 is a great choice - the 3410 would be too - you might appreciate the extra ponies when the new rotary cutter is mounted.

My 2 cents: R1 Ag's are really good for these models. R4's are stiff and shallow and need extra weight to make them bite. Don't be too worried about the durability of R1's. From what I've seen, flats are pretty rare. This site has a wealth of ideas on the tire subject. Have fun soaking it up.

Chuck,

I have an L3010 myself. Great tractor. From what I understand you intend to do, buy ags. If you plan to finish mow, then I might change my mind, but even that can be done with ags, you just have to be careful. But you didn't list that as a chore. I have turfs, and they are terrible in soft mud. Ags would be much better. Over tilled ground, i wouldn't even consider anything other than ags. I know the R-4's would be better than turfs, but they won't be as good as ags.

Go AGS!
