John Deere 3320
I was looking at the 2520 but the price was too high for what you get for the money. So I have decided on the 3320 but the size seems way overkill for me I can just imagine what the wife will say when the dealers drops it off and she comes out (pay money to see her face) and takes a look. My neighbors will think I need to have my head examined when they see it but I知 sick of upgrading and taking it on the chin on trade ins. I guess I need reassurance that I am not way over killing my need but I want to buy for the present and the future. I plan to buy more land in the future I like the idea of having a tough tractor around for what ever comes up when I need it.

No , not really. i have about the same property.
and i am thinking on getting a Kubota L39 or a JD 110.
talk about over kill.:D I have learned you need to buy what you like.
not what others think you should have. You know what your needs are.
if you like the 3320 , that what you should buy...;)

Chris...:)

Go big, or go home.

I don't really care what you buy, but am very interested in what you are going to do on 2.5 acres that requires that much tractor.

I've also got 2.5 acres.
When I bought my Deere 670 (looks like a smaller 790, 19 HP with 16.5 HP at the PTO), it was a perfect match for my needs. This work included brush cutting with a 5' cutter.
However, I wanted more PTO power for a chipper which lead me to a 2200 lb 790 with 27 HP (24 at the PTO).
The 790 was definitely overkill (since I never got the chipper), but I did end up doing more brush cutting (between 4-5 acres).
Now I'm not doing the brush cutting (except for about an acre) and I kind of wish I'd kept my 670 (which would have been paid off 3 or 4 years ago).

However...if you want a big toy, I suggest you go for it. If you want a proper sized tool for the job, you may want to reconsider.

Good luck (and enjoy your 3320!)

I think you will not regret it. "There is no replacement for displacement". You'll get a ton of work out of it. I have a little more land with a tiered property. Ther is a 42 foot cliff behind my home to the second tier which is wet part of the year. I have cleared the land partially and mow it. I built a road to the bottom tier to drive the tractors on. I have a 4700, 350 bulldozer and a skidsteer to take care of it and clean up after 2 horses. Most people feel it's overkill. I use the bulldozer more than you think.
I wouldn't regret buying a nice JD tractor, it will outlast your cars and most other things you own.

Just make sure you can turn it around on your property.:D

First the axiom of tractors: You can never have 'too big' of a tractor or buy too much tractor stuff. ;)

I bought a 3320 for 6.5 acres and thought that was overkill.... ;) Since my 2305 did just fine on it. I've since traded the 3320 for a 3720 cab so I can't be one to talk... ;)

My only worry is if it would be too big and do damage. If you bought it to mow 2.5 acres I'd say your in this category and you'll do more lawn damage than mowing with a 2305 or 2320, etc. If your doing 'tractor stuff' then I don't know, maybe it's not overkill. Maybe you need the height, lift capacity, etc. BTW: When I bought my 3320 I did the same thing, the 2520 was too expensive and too close to the price of a 3320 so I went for the 3320.

I have a 2.6 acre lot and a 6.2 acre lot. On my 2.6 the 2305 is more than I need. In all honesty it was more than adequate for the 6.2 acre lot when I used it there for mostly mowing and some loader work (I wanted a 2nd tractor to avoid transport and a bigger one for digging, stump grinding and just because. etc.). On the 6.2 the 3720 cab is overkill but I like overkill when it comes to tractors.... :)

One other consideration is that if you plan on transporting it you'll need a pretty good sized tandem trailer to move a 3320 once you put a loader on (close to 1500# with the bucket), loaded tires (900# for the large R4's), and a ballast block (1000-1100#).

One other thing. If you are going to mow with that, save your $$$ on the MMM unless you plan to leave it on all the time. Buy a cheap lawn tractor, zero turn, or RFM. The 72" 7 iron MMM cuts like a dream but is very expensive and taking it on and off get's old awfully quick if you want to to 'tractor work' (You don't want to bang up that 3k+ deck). I have one and bought an 84" RFM last summer - I will use the MMM probably just for material collection (leaves) in the fall now.

We don't know what you'll be using this for on your 2.5 acres. I have 1.5 and my 2305 is (honestly) overkill about 90% of the time. The other 10% is pretty sweet though... :)

Why don't you tell us what you have lined up (besides the future purchase of land) for this 3xxx series on 2.5 acres and we'll be better able to help you out.

Good luck!

Seems like the key phrase is that he "plans to buy more land in the future". So it might be best to get a handle on exactly how much more land is in the future plan, and what tasks he will be doing on it, before deciding on a machine to buy now.

Also, might need to decide on exactly how far in the future the purchase of the additional land will be. No sense in saddling yourself with an uncomfortably large machine (is that even possible?) if you won't really be needing it for 20 years.
