I have a Wallenstein PTO chipper that I should be able to run without being on the tractor's driver's seat. However, when I put the transmission in "N," apply the parking brake and attempt to engage the PTO without being on the driver's seat the tractor shuts off.

I figure it has to be the neutral switch as the parking brake indicator light illuminates which means that switch is working. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment for the neutral switch, or is it an remove / replace situation? Is there any other switch I am missing that would affect PTO operation?

Here's the exact procedure from the 3x20 series manual:

NOTE: The rear PTO can be engaged with the operator off the seat. The Safety Interlock System will stop the engine and all implements if the mid-PTO is engaged and the operator gets off the seat.

NOTE: The PTO selector lever has three operating positions:

Top (tractors without a cab) or rearward (for tractors with a cab) for rear PTO only.

Bottom (tractors without a cab) or forward (for tractors with a cab) for mid-PTO only.

Center for both rear and mid-PTO at the same time.

Engaging Rear PTO

1. Sit on operator痴 seat.

2. Move transmission to neutral position:

PowrReverser: Depress clutch pedal completely and move the transmission gear and range shift levers and the reverser lever to the N (neutral) position.

eHydro: Move the range shift lever to the N (neutral) position.

3. Lock park brake.

4. Push all PTO engagement knobs to the disengaged/off position.

NOTE: The starter will not crank if the rear/mid PTO engagement knob is pulled to the engaged/on position.

5. Start the engine and adjust speed to 1500 rpm.

6. Move the PTO selector lever to top/rearward position for rear PTO only.

7. Get off the operator痴 seat.

8. Pull the rear PTO engagement knob to the engaged/on position to engage the rear PTO.

The engine should continue to run.

The instrument panel PTO engaged light will illuminate when the rear PTO is engaged.

9. Adjust the hand throttle lever forward to the desired speed for implement used.

NOTE: The PTO marker on the tachometer indicates engine speed for a standard 540 PTO.

Make sure you're following that procedure exactly.

If the rear PTO still doesn't actuate, you probably have a bad seat switch or neutral safety switch. There are test procedures for both switches, but I doubt my 4400 service manual would be much help to you. Neither switch is too costly...about $20-$25, IIRC. I'd test your seat switch by running the tractor, put it in neutral, engaging the PTO and standing up. The tractor engine should stop.

Thanks for the time to look up and quote the Owner's manual. The first thing I did was get out the Owner's manual, double check the procedure, and did it step-by-step. This is an E-Hydro model, and I followed the procedure to the letter - no joy.

I've tested the seat switch as suggested, with the tractor in "N," and then stood up - tractor shut down. Have tried it with the transmission in "N," parking brake "ON" - tractor shuts off.

Of course, I can run the PTO when seated on the tractor, which I have done previously when using a rotary cutter and a Harley rake, and have tested it seated with the wood chipper attached - PTO works. So, I'm guessing the seat switch is "OK."

The way I read the instructions for the E-Hydro is that with the transmission in "N," parking brake "ON," Operator off the seat - pull the PTO switch "ON," - PTO should operate.

Unfortunately, I don't have the service manual for the tractor - I guess I'll call the local JD dealer & talk with their mechanic to see if he has any ideas.

I'm thinking the neutral safety switch...IIRC, it's located on the lower right side of the transmission case on my 4400.
I've attached the electrical component location page from my service manual. It might help you locate the switch. You'd be looking for the HST switch

Thanks - I'll look on the transmission - shouldn't be that hard to find now that I know approximately where it should be located. Since this is an E-Hydro 3320 - I'll look on both sides if it is not as indicated in your manual.

On my e-hydro 3520, I simply start the engine while off of the seat (standing at the side of the tractor), turn on the PTO at idle speed, and then increase the engine speed up to PTO speed for the BearCat chipper/shredder I use. Transmission is in Neutral and parking brake is set.

I will just say this: Most who have this problem ignore step #7 before doing step #8. Not saying this is your problem as it sounds like your doing it correctly, but just thought I should mention it.

I've tried the procedure according to the Operator's Manual starting the PTO off the seat, and have tried it sitting on the seat.

With the tractor transmission in "N," parking brake "ON," sitting on the seat the PTO will start - if I stand up - tractor shuts off.

I've tried both PTO start procedures (off seat / on seat) with the tractor running, and then setting the transmission at "N," parking brake "ON," turning the tractor off - restarting the tractor so that it is started in neutral with the parking brake "ON" with me off the seat pull PTO switch - engine stops; me on the seat start tractor pull switch PTO starts, stand up - engine stops.

On my e-hydro 3520, I simply start the engine while off of the seat (standing at the side of the tractor), turn on the PTO at idle speed, and then increase the engine speed up to PTO speed for the BearCat chipper/shredder I use. Transmission is in Neutral and parking brake is set.

Yep - that's the way it SHOULD work - my 3320 won't do that.

Sounds like a trip the dealer is now necessary.
