Thanks guys, starter works fine just a hit and miss if its gonna engage or not.when it engages turns the motor over just fine. That's why I'm thinking Bendix issue.I suspect just gummed up. Tractor sits a lot.I'm still working on getting it home from my buddies house before they head south for the winter hinting down a trailer this week!!

if the starter spins but does not engage.. you will be pulling it for sure.
have a few 6" extensions ready, and a wobble socket if you hav eit.
fuel filter head usually has to come off or loosened. i've never had to take an injector pump off.

OK so got her home and got the old starter off and disassembled.starter needs a lot of work. So believe best route is to replace it. I can get a generic replacement for $151.00 plus shipping. Or get the Lucas (that's what's on it now) for $204+ s/h.
So looking for opinions, I'm leaning toward the Lucas but really have no inSight on this one.

The first pic is the flywheel. Has some burrs but I think I can dress it out OK. No chipped or missing teeth.then there's a pic of the split drive gear clutch and a pic of the armature wear.its pretty close to a 1/16" deep. Also wear on all the bushings and brushes are pretty badly worn maybe 50%?

Hard to tell on the pics of wear thru a phone. For the starter, I had my Lucas rebuilt, havnt seen the replacements. Do you have a local rebuilder?
