3720 vs 4120

so guys tell me the difference. Orange vs Green.

$2500 less for a two models ago used Kubota compared to a new Deere. Less eHydro, less LoadMatch. Less Isolated Operator Station. Orange.

I've been keeping track of the discussion's regarding the larger 30 series and the low end 40 series (4120, 4320) since the new models appeared on the market.

I believe that the 3520 and the 3720 are both turbo charged as are all the 40 models. The 3520 turbo is not intercooled, but the 3720 is. I'm guessing that the larger displacement JD engines on the 40 series are intercooled. Maybe someone here on the forum can verify that for all.

I don't know how the fuel system on the 40 series can be primed if you run out --- but I'd like to believe that JD engineers have recognized the necessity of making that process as simple as the Yanmar engines. Here again, someone might lend a word on how difficult it is to fire the PowerTek engine up after the tank runs dry.

You mentioned that you will be mowing 18 acres. That's a fair bit; especially if you will have to mow it numerous times during the year.

If your land is relatively flat and free of obstructions -- I'd seriously consider a pull-type mower. JD makes an 8 foot model (MX-8) that the 4120 would handle if you're not mowing Burmada grass or 3 foot salt grass. Especially if you keep after the grass and keep the field regrowth short.

However, if you've got slopes or hills and gullies --- stay with the 6' foot 3pt model. That said, if you've got slopes, the bigger profile tractor is a more stable platform to operate from.

My .02 sense would be to go with the bigger unit to cover those 30 acres. And if you were to start up projects on more of those acres in the future; you've got enough tractor to "get r done"!

Down here in the Lower 48, we call them a bit differently

(Deere numbering is pretty weird!)

They are all 20 series.

The 4000TWENTY's and 3000TWENTY's (preferred...)

or 4020's and 3020's (but since there was a Deere 4020 this get's hairy...

Calling them 3000's and 4000's is tough too, because there was a 4000 series.

in the current naming structure the CUTs have been brought in line with the whole lineup.

The first digit is the frame size.
The next is the relative position in that size.
the next is the series (like model year on cars)
So we have had 00's 10's and now 20's

03 and 05 are bargain machines. I guess 03 is a very basic machine and 05 is more a 'value package'

The 4120 has arriced at the dealer and i can hardly wait to get there. but it has been raining all day and tonight is church night, so i will go tomorrow.

If it handles like i think it will, that is what i am going with. i think. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I generally prefer American Made when possible/practical. In this case, I chose the Yanmar (Japan) equipped 3720 over the Powertech (Mexico) equipped 4720. The Powertech is quite new and has ad a few (albeit minor) issues primarily with the Stanadyne fuel syetem. I'm not a fan of Stanadyne.

I opt for power/perfformance where possible. Do not be afraid of the turbo. It is your friend. It will keep your engine from smoking, make more power and better exhaust temps. Treat it right, idle/cool down before you shut down (like you should anyhow) and you will not have problems. The intercooler on the 3720 is a bonus...

I went through all these same issues (except the MMM) before purchasing my 3720. I was very tempted to go to the 4120.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the difference in the loaders?
The 400CX has more reach and lift AND.... you can get it with auto-leveling. OH I wish they had offered that on the 300CX!!!
That alone almost made it for me.

I finally went with the 3720 because the size was more appropriate for the work I had in mind. The engine is quieter.
By the way folks, I got those "John Deere" noise cancelling headphones and I like them a lot. Picked them up at Lowes.

The 4x20 engine is larger displacement 4 cylinder and has more torque than the Yanmar. I have had Yanmar diesels before, on my 855 and sailboats and have no issues with them. Great engines. I do really like the auto bleeding fuel system.

As to Orange v.s. Greenies...The transmissions are definately better on the Deeres. The pedal layout is much better. Other than that they wash out with points here, points there. Power to size ratio generally goes to the Deeres. The Kubota's (especially the L39/L48 TLB) have some very cool features.

As to the lawn damage. I got my 3720 with the largest R-4's. I have Oregon wet clay lawn/mud and although I don't have quite the traction with the R-4's, the extra width and tread design make for much less tire impressions in both the lawn and our dirt/mud roadways. I am happy with that choice.

One more tid-bit, if you are still reading /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
If you get the 3720, order the arm rests from the 4120. It is the same seat. We looked carefully at the seat and the hole pattern.

Drove out over the week end to the dealer and got there after he closed. Had to keep the grand babies so i am not complaining. But he had the 4120 sitting out and i liked it a lot. did not get to drive it. will do that later on in the week.

I checked the seat out and it did not have arm rest. It was just like the 3720 sitting beside it. is that an option? can it be added later.

Also will the tur tires help protect the yard and still preform ok bush hogging and doing loader work?
