i've been in the market for a 3pt chipper for awhile and now w/ tax return i'll have some extra cash for a purchase. i have narrowed my choices down to 3. the salsco 4in manual feed model, the jinma, and the bearcat manual feed. i plan to use the chipper for anything less than 3in dia, mainly brush/ fallen limbs, and field edge/ stone wall clearing. for my amount of use i'm thinking the jinma would be sufficient but i'm not sure i want to deal w/ all the "fine tuning". i will be mostly running it off my jd 790, but have a larger older jd gasser available if needed. thanks jim

Has anyone ever tried renting a 3PH Chipper?

For limited chipping, in my area, you can rent a hydraulic feed chipper for around $200 or less per day. I am not sure that renting a 3 Pt chipper would be worthwhile as I can't imagine the cost being much if any less than a self powered model.

I just picked up a used Bearcat chipper model 73420 for $1800 off Craigslist. It is manual feed and self powerd with a honda 20 hp vtwin engine. That was cheaper than I could purchase even a used 3 Pt hitch chipper for in this area and I have been watching Craigslist etc for months looking for a 3 pt model.

This is what I got but used.

I know I lucked out on the price but I have seen other used self powered chippers in the 2 - 3k range. Unless you need to get the chipper into an area only the tractor can get to a self powered chipper makes more since to me. I use my tractor to tow the chipper around and I use my grapple to bring material to it. It works very well.

I have a Jinma that I bought off ebay from a local fellow this winter.
Couple of weeks ago a buddy stopped by with a truck full of branched to be chipped.. I didn't look at my watch but I'm guessing it took about an hour to hour and half to get the whole pickup truck done. I think we spent more time trying to get the branches off the truck than anything. We chipped the pieces onto a tarp and then loaded the tarp back into the truck. He uses the chips around his house for the kids play areas.
Bottom line we used it about an hour and had no real problems, well other than a stuck branch or two. Once I learned that you should start the branch on the left side of the chute it seemed to go much easier.

Liberty is one of the most expensive ways to buy one of these 'Jinma' chippers. If you need dealer support and want to support advertisers of this site, there are several that sell the chipper. Or you can go the EBAY route...which I did. I bought a 8" for about $1250 including shipping. The following EBAY listing is one of the better designed chippers sold on that site...

Another thing to remember, is there is no 8" Jinma, anybody who trys to sell you one is just trying to make extra money off you. If you dont think so look at the spec between the 6" and 8".. They are the same.
