I have an implement for a farm tractor that weighs 1200#s. I'm building a three point hitch mount out of A36 flat bar that is 1/2x3". The flat bar has 1-1/8" holes drilled in it 1-1/2" from the back and 1-1/2" from the top and bottom for an outside edge distance if 15/16" all the way around. The implement is 7' long overall with the 1/2" flat bar sticking 6" past unit. My question is: will the (4) pieces of 1/2" flat bar with the 1-1/8" holes be strong enough to pull and LIFT the implement? image.jpg

There are plenty of Land Plane builds on here.

Thanks! I'm not as interested in any one specific build as I am in the question I initially asked. I'm interested as to whether or not that 1.125" pin will pull past .937" worth of Structural steel at four different points for a given weight of 1200#. The actual build is immaterial. Thank you for your time.:dance1:

I think I understand your question. No, 1200 lbs is not going to shear the holes in the 1/2 inch flat bar. Just back of the envelope conservative calcs, it would take over 10 tons to shear one pin and almost that much to shear the flat bar. The concerns would be ovaling of the holes over time and bending of the flat bars depending on how you build the implement.

Awesome answer! Exactly what I was looking for. I may end up cutting some 3"x3"x3/8" flat with 1-1/8" holes and welding the to the ends as a sort of reinforcement just for giggles. Thanks again KennyG!

I recommend you have 2 inches of clearance from the pin to the implement. So instead of using a 3x3 piece I would recommend using 3"x4" which would work out to 1 15/16ths of rear clearance.

Your landplane looks great so far enjoy the build.
