If I follow the link from the first post to the splitter, it is $499 + freight. If I go directly to Northern, it is $699 + freight. What the....?

They have a model that is $699 but it does horizontal and vertical. The $499 job is only horizontal.

They sell two versions of the TPH splitter. The $500 model operates horizontally only. The $700 model operates horizontally, or tilts 90 degrees to operate vertically. See Log Splitters | Logging | Northern Tool + Equipment

For comparison purposes, the Huskee horizontal/vertical I got from TSC was (at the time) under $600 .

I use the Northern Log Splitter on the back of my b7500. Hydraulic output is only 3.9 GPM on my pump. The splitter operates at an OK speed. I would want something faster if I was splitting wood to sell, but for the 12 or so face cords per year I need for my own use - it is sufficient.

As for power, I am quite satisfied with the power. I have spit some big/nasty logs and neither the tractor nor the splitter have any problem at all. The logs don't stand a chance.

In the future, I may switch to a PTO pump to get a higher speed. My back hoe has a PTO pump and I may set it up with quick disconnects so I can move the pump from the backhoe to the spitter. I would then install a reservoir on my splitter.

Be aware that you will need a huge (oversize) disconnect in the suction line to avoid restricting the line too much ....... typical quick disconnects usually carry a disclaimer that they are not to be used in a suction line. A camlock fitting might be your best bet .... although I suspect it would be a bit messy.

I bought a Northern 3PH splitter and returned it because it did not have a detent position in the return stroke. I did not have any one else to pick up wood while I was holding the valve in the return position so this was wasting about 5 sec per split. I sure can't lift a log with one hand. I figured I could double my output or reduce the time my 40HP tractor is running in half with a detented valve feature. Show me a stand alone splitter that does not have a detent valve in the return position of the stroke (they don't make any). The slower the tractor pump the more important an automatic (hands free) retract is. Get the TS splitter.

This was about 3 years ago. I told the store guy that is why I was returning it. Maybe they got the idea.

Mine is the 499 horizontal version.
