What would yall consider a good buy on a 3py log splitter? It uses remote hydraulic hook ups not off the PTO. It is constructed with an I-beam and appears to have a new valve on it. Have not talked to the guy yet or seen it run, i have a pic but have to wait to get home to get it off my phone and onto the net.

I paid just under $600 for mine, a SpeeCo 4x24 from Tractor Supply. But it didn't come with hoses, so that pushed the ready-to-use price up slightly. But the only tractor I see listed in your sig line is a YM2000. They don't typically come with rear remotes. Have you added a pair yourself? Also - assuming the YM2000 - you might want to check the gpm rating of its hydraulic pump against the cylinder size of the splitter you're considering. Goes to splitter cycle time.

Not sure what a good buy would be but I would deffinatally check your GPM specs.

A brief look and I couldn't find them but it is probabally about 5gpm. Assuming you have rear remotes and can run the splitter, If it is a 4x24 cylinder(most are) this would give you about 16 seconds jsut to extend the cylinder. A little less to retract. So you are looking at about a 30 second total cycle time. That is really slow. Most stand alone units on the market are in the 12-16 second range. So you are looking at about twice as slow as most splitters. If you can live with that, go for it if it is a good price.

Yea i dont have remotes, i also posted a thread about adding them to the yanmar. I have a metal line that has a rubber hose where with some fab i could hook up quick disconnects and run it off them. But yea i think 5gpm is close enough and that cycle time would not suit me, thanks, i think i may pass , unless i think i can buy and sell for a profit. They want $350 for it.

That is probabally not too bad of a price if it is in good shape.

Of if you are considering building one, that is a good start with a beam, cylinder and valve. All you would need is a tank, pump, and motor.

i even thought about that too. I could get a HF motor fairly cheaply, but then id need the pump n tank etc.

Tank should be easy to fab if you are handy, if not, a shop could probabally build you one for under $100. And a pump woud rund you about $150

Another option might be a PTO pump and tank. I built one a few years ago using 22 GPM PTO pump. It worked great. I liked the 3pt design but it ties up the tractor when used.

That is one nice splitter! I like the table!

I later added "wings" to the table with 3/8" rod. got tired of split pieces flopping off the table and having to pick them up off the ground. Thanks.

It appears to be homemade and havent been run in ages. I dont see any oil spots on the beam so it might be a good working condition. Only way to tell is hook it up and run it.

Yup, definitely a do-it-yourself appearance. Looks to me like you won't be able to split anything much longer than 15-16 inches. I try to keep mine at or under 22 inches due to the size of the fireplace. But pretty sure I can get at least 26 inchers on my SpeeCo.

I'm thinkin' that's about a $100 machine there.

Certainly shop built but there is nothing wrong with that. I wonder why they have the spacer welded to the ram. There appears to be enough stroke on the cylinder to function without it. I purchased a factory unit like this at auction about 5 years ago for $150.00 I think that he is too high @ $350. Make an offer. Also, check to find out how much remotes or power beyond for your tractor will cost. It could be a deal breaker. All that said, I have really like my 3pt log splitter.

Like the folks have told me my hydro pump is not fast enough for me to consider this. I have figured our how to add power beyond on my tractor it would be a couple QD's and some new ends made up to the lines for the splitter so cost is minimal, but some have guessed that my tractors 5gpm flow rate will return and 30-40 second cycle rate, with is not fast enough for me. i dont think i will even talk to him about it. Dont think he will come down to $200 or so.

Around here I could buy the valve and cylinder new for $500, add some hoses and steel....welding rod, cutting gas, grinding wheels, green and yellow paint.....I'd pay $300
