I have noticed that the ballast box moves with the FEL curl even though the cut off valve is closed. On the X585 when the dealer installed the FEL they put in a cut off valve, I believe, in the the return line of the 3 pt cylinder. This valve is like a needle valve requiring several turns. It seems to work when I first start the tractor but as I start using the bucket the ballast box starts moving with the bucket dropping to the ground and causing me stress. Any thoughts on this and is there a way to physically lock up the 3 pt.?

DJLX,
I have a 3PH on my 595 with the same setup. Once you have the hitch in the fully raised position, adjust the hitch rocker arm fully to the top by turning in the threaded rod located on the left side of the hitch as far in as it will go. This prevents the hitch from moving up or down.

glagen -thanks I'll check this out. Do you not use the cut off valve then?

DJLX,

On my old 425 closing off the valve was enough to lock the hitch in place -- of course I only used a york rake or weight bar, so you might be carrying more wt. and have to try what Steve recommended.

DLX,
Yes I also close the cut-off valve. Fixing the rocker to the top solves the problem with the hitch moving but without the value closed off the mower midmount arms will continue to move up and down. Remember to open the value and move the rocker setting back down to the bottom whenever you want to remove the ballast box. Sometime the rocker rod mechanism is held so tight it is hard to loosen and you have to move the operating levers up and down a couple of times to release the pressure on the setting rod. Put the engine at full throttle and have the valve wide open when you do this or the box won't budge for lack of fluid.

I take my ballast box on an off regularly so I can pull around a 15 cu ft cart to load firewood, etc. What I did is make a dolly out of 3/4 plywood with heavy-duty casters on it slightly larger than the footprint of the box. Whenever I need to remove the box I lower it onto dolly. Then after disconnecting the box from the 3PH, I just roll it out of the way into the corner of the shed until I need to hook it up again. Works like a charm and beats tripping over the ballast box in the middle of the floor.

Contact me again if you have any problems.

I checked out the rockshaft stop and see that it works just fine. DUH!! Obviously no experience with 3 pt. I assume our bigger cousins have some operator lever to adjust as opposed to getting off the tractor and rotating the stop.
Good idea with the dolly-sounds like something I need to do as it is always in the way and not movable.
Thanks again

Am I understanding this correctly, you can't use your 3 point hitch when you have your loader on the tractor?

It's just that the 3 pt moves with the curl of the bucket even with the hydraulic cutoff valve closed. One doesn't want the ballast box moving and resting on the ground when using the loader. As was pointed out there is a stop shaft that you screw in/out to adjust the height the 3 pt lowers to which you have to do off of the tractor.

Maybe the X series work differently than a regular tractor. The 3 point hitch should not move at all when you are operating the loader. That is why I was asking if you could not use the 2 at the same time. I use my landscape box at the same time I use my loader. I would hate to not be able to use the 3 point when I was using my loader.

Yes, the X series three point hitch is quite a bit different than other larger tractors. The 3ph is controlled by the same cylinder that lifts the mower deck, which in turn is controlled by one of the hydraulic levers next to the steering wheel. When a loader or other front implement is installed, that implement also uses the control lever that raises the mower deck. (at least for one function). They provide a shutoff valve, which is supposed to stop the oil from operating the mower lift (and 3ph lift) cylinder. In this case, it sounds as if this shutoff valve is not shutting fully, and still allowing oil to operate that cylinder. Yes, there is a stop for the 3ph, and by using the highest mower setting the mower deck lift arms won't drop very far, but it sounds like there is still a problem with this particular shutoff valve.

good luck!
