Ed, you'll find we are really good at spending other people's money.

Question for the pounder fans is there any realistic easy to go that route with his budget? Seems to me the pounder alone would be more than half the budget and you're not putting that on a scut. Am I wrong?

I don't know about budget, maybe hiring someone to drive the posts would be a better option. But if he's putting in hi-tensile wire fence you almost have to drive them, otherwise they can pop out with the wire tension. I've even had driven posts come up where the fence crosses a low area at my place. I know this may set off a flame war with some that have put posts in drilled holes and they've been fine, but all the pros I talked to back when I had mine put in said drive them or you'll be sorry later.

I completely understand about budgets. The cool thing about a post pounder though is most people buy it, pound the posts they need to pound, and then they can sell it and recoup all of their costs. In the meantime, they have a much stronger fence in a fifth the time of drilling holes, setting posts and packing soil. I have two side-by-side acres I fenced, one with a PHD and then the following year with a driver, and the driver posts are set much better.

I didn't mean to say that they are or are not in everyones budgets or be insensitive in any way, I just threw that thought out there. It's something that rarely gets used, if you were closer you could borrow mine for free. Most also require hydraulics which not be present or easily accessible on whatever tractor route you choose.

One of my least favorite things to do is dig holes with my PHD. It seems that about every 10 holes or so it likes to grab a large rock or tree root and the harder I try to keep it from doing that...the more stuck it becomes. Nothing like taking a big pipe wrench and a long piece of pipe to "unscrew " that dang thing from deep in the earth. Usually ends with some colorful language :( Better than digging holes by hand...I guess...and I do get to practice my "vocabulary skill set". Go hydraulic or rent a hydraulic if you can. ;)

The most appreciated answer yet. Thanks again.

Go with a ground speed PTO MF if all you are doing is bush hogging and post hole digging. They are reliable and cheap

The ground speed tractors can reverse a stuck post hole auger out of the ground, where 99% of the other tractors can only screw it in the ground making a stuck auger no fun at all.

(You have to jack up one rear tire, put PTO in ground speed and trans in reverse and the PTO will turn backwards and unscrew the auger!)
