OK, this is a crazy idea; combining:

- sprayer for ATV (tank and pump for 12 Volts)
- Delco alternator
- auto battery
- 3 pt shaft

the whole thing to be attached to 3 pt hitch. The idea is that the pump runs on 12 volts from the battery and the alternator runs from the pto to charge the battery.

Too complicated? I already have the alternator, battery is not that expensive and the sparyer is about $100 AT TSC. I dont think the tractor battery/alternator can support the sprayer, but I was wrong before:)

What do you think? Should I quit whatever I am smoking when I come up with ideas like that? :D :D

Seems like your alternator should handle a sprayer. What size alternator do you have, and what loads does it support?

I use one on our ATV with the factory 12v outlet. Works fine. Why can't you wire in a 12v outlet (tie into the worklight circuit) and plug in.

Are you planning to hook the alternator to the PTO? Interesting idea.

I quess just hooking it to the tractor electrical system should work; need to find specs for the sprayer first.

I think as a minimum, you can do away with the battery. I would think an alternator tied to the PTO will run the sprayer directly.

You will probably have to gear up the alternator, though. They usually work better at higher RPM than what your PTO will give you. A big pulley on the PTO shaft and the smaller pulley on the alternator ought to be enough.

Another thing you need to consider is if your alternator has a built in voltage regulator.

Go for it and post pictures.

I have the 16 gallon sprayer from Nothern Tool. I just clip it on to the battery and put the sprayer in the FEL bucket. The hose is long enough to reach to the driver's seat.

An alternator has to have a battery to excite it. They will not charge a complety dead battery or work with out a battery starting it.......Larry

Right. I forgot that part.
I suppose running the work light circuit to excite the alternator gets into all sorts of sticky details about back feeding the voltage regulator and all kinds of other electrical problems.

Another comment: If the only real purpose of the battery is to excite the alternator, then you could probably get away with a cheapo lawn mower type battery.

Oh, I just thought of another one...

Do away with the alternator. If you're worried about the ability of your charging system to keep up with a sprayer, put an accessory battery in that charges off the tractor system. The sprayer would pull the short bursts of current from the battery, and the battery would use smaller current gradually to recharge.

Now I've managed to eliminate the one part of the system that you already have...the alternator :)

All you gotta do is find a DC motor (12v blower motor) hook it up to the PTO like you were gonna hook up the alternator . . . instant 12VDC.

I just ran a switched 12volt plug to the rear of the tractor and mounted it on the fender. I run a 25 gallon ATV sprayer with a 10ft boom without any problems. I had the sprayer before I had the tractor, just bought a carryall and wired the tractor. actually I'm looking for a plastic 55gallon drum for free to increase the capacity of this sprayer.
