3pt spreader or Crusher for wood and coal ashes

I'm looking to get a 3pt spreader to help with my driveway and my parents in the winter. Together it's over a mile to take care of, with the usual western pa hills and turns in the driveways. We each have an outside wood burner so we have a ton of coal and wood ash that we throw in 55 gallon drums to keep dry and currently use on my parents driveway. It's only a couple hundred feet long so we spread by hand. Mine being almost a mile long, I'm looking to pickup a 3 pt spreader but I know I need to crush the ashes so there able to run through. Any ideas on what to use to crush them? Or something I could use on the back of the tractor to spread them as is? I thought about making a manure spreader type design to spread them as is but if I can buy something reasonable I'd rather go that route.

I would be concerned about the size of the opening for your wood ash, the larger pieces may not fall down to the spinner.
A conventional highway type sander may work better for your purposes, set it on a trailer.
I have a Tarco highlander jr. when I sand my driveway I use my coal ashes along with sand.

I thought about throwing screen over the top to keep the bigger pieces out. We have so much I won't run out doing that. I'll check into a highway type and the tarco. We have an old drop type lime spreader that I may add onto the box and just use sand. Just hate to dump all those ashes over the hill when I could use them

Good luck with whatever you go with. One problem with the lime spreader could be not having an agitator and the taper of the hopper, if the sand and or ashes have any moisture they will bridge over.
