Been thinking about buying a 3 pt. tiller, and doing some research here and manufacturer websites. I see the TSC countyline 6' tiller is rated for a maximum of 50 hp. I don't understand this max hp rating. What is the purpose of it.
My tractor is 65hp, the soil is sandy loam, but can be hard when very dry, no rocks or roots, I chisel plow or subsoil yearly.
So is the 65 hp(pto) tractor liable to damage the 50 hp rated tiller?
Thanks.

The hp rating is the minimum pto hp required to run the attachment. Your tractor will easily handle the tiller. One thing that you may run into probems with an attachment like that with all the excess hp is you will want to have a clutched tiller that will slip when it jams rather than snapping shear pins or chains...my $.02

My understanding is that tillers have minimum and maximum HP ratings. The minimum is to run it without bogging the tractor down. The maximum is what the tiller is built to take. If you overpower a tiller, it will probably operate without a problem. However, if you get into something really rough and jam the tiller, if you are lucky it will shear a pin. If you are unlucky, it will break the gearbox. If you stay under the horsepower rating, you should stall the tractor before you break the gearbox/drive.
