What is so bad about 3pt backhoes? Is a sub mount better and why? Thanks

Probably the big thing is the forces generated by the backhoe that are significantly different from a towed implement. The sub-frame attachment points keep them away from the rear axle housing/3 pt hitch componets & ties the front & rear of the tractor together to reduce torsion between the two. I'm no subject area expert, but this is the gist of what I've read when reviewing the subject in the past. My 3038e has an aluminum rear axle housing. I wouldn't take a chance & use a 3 pt. BH there, but would instead use the Wood's sub-frame/BH combo if I really had to put a backhoe on it.

I have a woods 750 bought in 1985...been a great attachment. its strickly 3 point hitch. never a problem but I dont overdue it.Weel one time I did I had the diagional brace disconnected, and was digging a rock well below grade, and it ripped apart the top bracket that was on the tractor. Luckily it didn't rip the top casting off. This was purely my causing of the problem. That brace transferes.

Most backhoes I have seen, if they are powerfull enough to dig much, are also powerfull enough to toss the tractor they are hooked to around. This puts a lot of strain on even a weel designed subframe setup, loosing bolts, etc. Hate to see what they could do to a 3pt on a tractor. But it is your dime....

+1. The backhoe on my little BX23 isn't that powerful compared to most larger ones, but it can sure toss the BX23 around. I'd hate for all those stresses and twisting forces to be on my 3 point hitch instead of the subframe.

My backhoe on my B7610 is strong enough to pick up the tractor. It'll shake the tractor like our Corgi shakes a shoe.

if you get a 3pt hoe.. deffinately try to fab up some kind of extra bracing for it.

I have a woods 6500 on an old 1955 ford 850. I made up a sub frame that grabbed bolts on axle trumpets used for fenders and rops.. also some ont he center housing for the trumpet to center, plus more from top cover to center. I also made a cage/brace bracket for the toplink, to keep the top connection from jerking the tractors draft sensing toplink all over the place.

She digs good.. and as someone else said. the tail can easilly wag the dog if the hoe is made to really dig.

I would never consider the 3PT strong enough to carry a backhoe attachment, much less withstand the torque that it will put on the arms and connecting brackets.
Perhaps a small unit on a large tractor might work but to max out a unit may cause damage if not used properly.
The 509 on my Mahindra 3510 would probably tear it apart without the subframe mount. I do some pretty tough digging and grubbing with it as well as maneuvering the tractor around, don't think a 3PT would do what I do.

Just my :2cents:

and yet.. 3pt mount backhoes are made and sold every day.

all you need is the proper mount.. and common sense.

and use both!

What if I turned the Woods BH 6000 into a trailer/towable unit like the DR towable model. All I wood have to do is build a platform and some wheels and use a ball hitch to mount and unmount the unit. i could leave it hooled up to the tractors drawbar while digging.

I don't know how something like that would work. My tractor is upwards of 8400#, and even planted as best I can with the bucket and outriggers, she still gets shoved around by the hoe if it wants to ... You would be better off trying to brace the 3pt to the mass of your tractor for leverage.....

if you are going to do that much fabbing.. you could just make a GOOD subframe...

i have to agree.

back when i was looking at a towable digger vs a 3pt one.. I finally decided if you got into something that was thick like clay.. you'd be scooting the hoe all around unless it was anchored and planted.

Can't remember the thread but I remember a picture being posted of a 3pt BH on a tractor that was overstressed// it took the top link connection and good sized part of rear housing with it.
Not a pretty site

sure... you can break a tracor in half with an unsupported 3pt hoe. that's what subframes are for.
