3rd funcyion valve

I am glad someone got what they needed for their tractor.

Although the price in the above kit at $349 is better than Longs $600, I fail to see the advantage of buying a ready made kit for a tractor.

The one solenoid valve from Surplus that does all the work, is only $149. I just don't see the other parts in the kit costing $200, and Longs kit $600. That is $450 in other parts other than the valve.

The company that makes up these kits are doing the same work as you could by gathering all the parts and making a good profit on the unsuspecting person, thinking that kit was made especially for them.

Installation

Bolt the valve down somewhere, and match valve fittings with your hose. Obtain 2 more hoses, some wire, and switch and put it all together.

I have the wr long kit and it was very easy to install. I am happy I went with this kit and Nelson was a pleasure to do business with, I do highly recommend him.
However, I am having a (minor) issue with mine. Supposedly you should be able to operate the grapple at the same time as the curl function, but I can only operate one at a time. If I'm curling my grapple the grapple won't close, I have to stop curling, then toggle my switch to close the grapple, then go back to curl.
I double checked my installation at nelsons recommendation and found everything is lined up correctly. I never did figure out if it was a problem or not. Just FYI.

If you apply full lever to the curl, you use all the pump fluid during the curl. When the curl goes to neutral, you can use full grapple, meaning full flow and more speed. If you feather the curl, and apply grapple, you could use the fluid not used by the curl circuit.

With a 10 GPM pump flow, you could use 5 GPM for the curl and 5 GPM for the grapple at the same time.

If you are using the grapple and hit the curl, the speed of the grapple will slow down or stop.

What is the curl time, about 8 sec. Should not be a big problem.

Option:

You could customize the curl circuit with small washers with an orifice, that will pass about half of the pump flow, thereby allowing you to use the grapple and the curl together. Smaller curl hose might do this to some degree.

Could also use needle valves to vary control for different operations.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's the great thing about tractorbynet. We can all share what has worked for us and what hasn't.

I do have a hard time with someone characterizing companies that sell solutions as trying to "pull one over on unsuspecting people." If that were the case, why would PMI (a company that makes grapples and many other attachments) sell their "unsuspecting customers" exact same diverter valve solution? Yes, I did my homework on where to buy the best solution at the right price.

Some people have done the research and purchased the solution that worked best for them.

For me, I didn't want to:
1) Buy a valve, pay shipping for that alone.
2) Drill holes into the frame. I might want to move it later.
3) Fabricate a mount. I've got better things to do with my time.
4) Try to find a water-proof switch that mounts directly to the handle.
5) Spend hours running around looking for wires and water-proof connections.
6) Buy the proper wire connection crimping tool. They're pricey.
7) Rely on vague instructions. I want it to be clear.
8) Be able to call someone if I have a problem.

It's pretty simple. This is one of those "make or buy" decisions. You can make up your own mind.

I agree with your thinking, and that is the easy way,

but,

I think the point here is , that if you have the capability, why let someone else do the work for you.

Can you really see $200, or $400 in parts other than the valve?

I think that valve requires a solenoid to be energized for each selection. I like the one I got at Bailey's because it supplies the normal function with nothing energized and diverts to the grapple when I push the button. Plus it is less $.

Check out this excerpt from the Surplus Center diverter instrustions. I really don't like the way flow is blocked when nothing is energized.
Open Center Circuits: Valve can only be used as a selector valve to make a single set of outlets act like two. Use a SPDT Center O switch, and select the desired circuit. NOTE: Be sure to make your selection on this valve before moving your tractor lever. Otherwise, fuid will likely flow over the tractor痴 relief, as all ports on the selector are blocked in the 前FF position.

Reminds me of the time I thought there was something wrong with my selector valve - then I realized my tractor key was switched off.

Here is the valve I have:

The valve I posted above Item# 9-5117 is the valve in stock right now, but it does block all OUT ports with no pwr.

However there is a fix for that. A spring loaded switch with one position up for curl, and a position down for grapple. One of the solenoids will be powered on with tractor pwr switch on.

There is another neat thing about this valve, and that is you can power both solenoids on and use curl and grapple at the same time. A pinching action if you will.

I normally post the this valve Item# 9-5117-A , which allows the curl circuit with power off. Apply pwr and both valves switch, providing flow to the grapple.

I am curious about a DC solenoid, or AC solenoid and that is if you turn a solenoid upside down, will it push the other way. Is there a set way to install a solenoid?

Water valve solenoids have a spring to apply plunger pressure on to block off equalizing water to shut the valve off. Pwr on pulls the plunger up or in to let water equalize and flow to the sprinklers.
