Re: 4\' or 5\' Box Blade for 19HP 4X4

I have been contemplating a BB purchase of my own, and everything here makes sense...but I have an added variable to my version of this dillemma.

I have a 20HP gear-driven 4X4...but I have turf tires, which makes my track about 55" wide. Do I get a 48" or a 60"? I know the 48" would be easier to work with, but it'll never cover my tracks...does anyone make a 4.5 footer /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sam,
There are 54" Box Blades and that may just be what you need. Just my opinion but I would always buy a blade that covered my tracks regardless of the amount of power I had. I can always make more passes and take smaller bites but I can never cover my tracks on the finish grade if the blade is narrower than my tires.

Re: 4\' or 5\' Box Blade for 19HP 4X4

I know that the reasoning behind covering your tire tracks seems to bee a hot issue, but I really don't think a few inches is going to make that much difference when we are talking about a box blade. I would much rather have a few inches of tire tracks showing than have a blade that is too big for my tractor to handle comfortably. I understand that between 48" and 54" is only 6" but that can add up with a full load of dirt, or gravel. Could be the difference in moving and not moving. I don't mean to be argumentative. Just thinking here (I know that is dangerous for me..) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 4\' or 5\' Box Blade for 19HP 4X4

DaGoatMan,
You make a valid point and I sure do understand what you are saying. Like many discussions here what is hard to understand is the end users conditions and needs. In sections of the N.E., where there is a great deal of rock, I understand that many dealers don't even stock Box Blades. They feel a box just isn't effective in the rock littered soil. In much of Florida you go about 2' and are pulling a full heavy load of sand. Mine is used mainly for gravel road maintenance and covering my tracks is important, as it would be for a landscaper prepping a finish lawn. Individual conditions can be everything when choosing the right piece of equipment.

By the way, I didn't think you were being argumentative at all. Sharing your opinion based on your experience is the way we all learn and why we spend the time on the forum.

Re: 4\' or 5\' Box Blade for 19HP 4X4

Maybe it's because I own and use a box blade, I just have trouble seeing it as a finish grade implement. Nothing I have done with my box blade even comes close to being finish grade. Maybe after running a landscape rake or drag over the area it may be finished. If you are ready to plant grass or whatever after using a box blade then those few inches of tire tracks are insignificant. I do see more of a need for covering tracts with the landscape rake, but an inch or 2 inside the tire tracks I still don't think would hurt over all. Maybe it's just my inexperience with the blade that makes me think this way.

Can't say positively but I think it was $279.00 or $315.00 for the 5 footer.
