It is a shoe planter vs a disc planter, so keep that in mind if you have to plant into a bunch of residue.

494/495 Deere planters are driven via a drive shaft that is in turn powered by the lift wheels and NOT the closer wheels on each row. They are NOT individual row units that can be operated independently such as #24/25, #44, #70/71's unit planters. On a 494/495, the fertilizer applicators are paired, with a common hopper for the left pair and the right pair of rows. It's relatively difficult to retain the fertilizer units when split to form a 2-row unit. The 494/495 has to remain a pull-type planter with the lift wheels remaining as the sole source of drive power for the unit.

They CAN be narrowed down into a 2-row planter, but there are better options, such as the 246/247 2-row, or individual unit planters such as the classic #70/71's.

He doesn't know how to have real junk and keep it that way! Every piece of junk he shows us ends up as a museum piece.

I have a 494 converted to a 1 row. It has been rigged to run off of the press wheel instead of the drive wheels. It works fairly well but not as well as the John Deere 71's. I will probably up grade in a year or 2.
