I'm considering buying a bx22, I've decided on the high output alt. block heater and toothbar. But I think I read that someone put a 4 way valve on theirs. What is it? I assume it's for the loader. I have never owned a tractor. What does a 4 way valve do? Thanks to anyone who replies.

I got the four way valve for my loader. (I also got a high capacity alternator, but skipped the block heater- temperate climate. No toothbar, yet.) To quote the loader manual;

"4 position bucket control valve type

This control valve has a two stage dump position. The first dump position (by moving the lever to the right) is the "Regular" dump position.
It has good power and control for precise dumping. This position should be used when operating another implement with the loader's control valve.
The second position (to the further right) features greater speed for dumping. These positions are separated by a "Feel" position for your convenience.'

I chose to spend to extra $40 dollars because of this description in the price list;

"B2009 Optional Four Position, Bucket Spool
Required for FZB2019 Fron Blade / Loader combination."

The front blade is apparently the "other implement" mentioned. Do I have a front blade? Nope. But I didn't want to limit my options, and for the price difference, it was a done deal. Oddly enough, my dealer never pointed me to this. I ended up quoting the part (and page) numbers as he wrote up the invoice.

From what I can tell, the three position valve actually lacks the "Regular" position described in the manual- it goes immediately, and only, to the faster position.

One difference occurs to me- on the B7500, the loader controls stay on the tractor when the loader is removed. Unless I am mistaken, on the BX-22, the loader valve is removed along with the loader. If true, this means that the loader valve can't be "used when operating another implement".

If you intend to use a hydraulic angling front blade or the front snowblower, then you will need the 4-way valve.

The four-way valve system indeed is designed to be able to be used with other implement, such as the front blade for which it is required. One other thing...it can be removed from the FEL once you take the FEL off and be put back on the tractor quite easily. On my BX-22 FEL, there are removable pins to disengage the whole post assembly from the dismounted FEL. I believe this is now also available on the BX-2200 FEL, but I'm not positive.

My BX-22 came with the four-way valve installed...I didn't have to ask for it. But my dealer, Mid-State, tends to order the machines well-equipped, from what I can see.

Does this valve allow the bucket to float?

David,

Maybe. It gives you two different dump positions, a "fast" and "normal". The "fast" mode seems to be a "free-fall" type of deal. If I push the joystick all the way over past the detent, the bucket will dump faster and actually slam at the bottom (I use this occasionally to clear the bucket of sticky dirt). If this is really just opening the cylinder and letting gravity push the oil out, then it might be what you call "bucket float". Come to think of it, I've never tried to see if this is the case.

The 4-way valve adds a regenerative function to the dump valve. I don't fully understand the difference, but if you do a search on "regenerative", you should find the post where Kubmech explained the differences. Whatever it is, it is necessary if you wish to use either of Kubota's front-mounted hydraulic implements. I think the front blade needs it for power angle, and I believe the snowblower needs it for the hydraulic chute angle.

I use the float capabilty when plowing snow all the time. I've also used it when grooming the driveway with the FEL.
