4 wd lever stiff... now won\'t shift

My TC 40D has 360hr. Only problem so far was the battery leak problem and the dealer handled that very well. Now...the last couple of times that I shifted into, or out of, 4wd, it seemed really stiff. Now it is in 4wd and will not come out. I took the linkage off underneath and the lever that goes into the side of the casing seems locked tight. Any ideas? I am calling the dealer tomorow but I just wondered what you guys thought. Have others had this problem that you know of?

Gene, you may have a problem, but the first thing I'd check is to make sure the drive train isn't in a bit of a bind. The easiest way I know to do that is to use the front end loader to lift the front tires off the ground and then see if it'll come out of 4WD.

Yeah Bird, you're right. After placing the post I went back and looked at the 4wd threads. Some said to lift the front end with the loader and it would come out. Sure enough, it worked. I should have checked that before I posted. TBN scores again. The help that is here is unmatched...............

Another way to get it out is by backing up slowly and turning the steering wheel to the left and right. This will unwrap the driveline. Drivelie wrapup is caused by driving around in 4WD and turning the tractor on hard surfaces. You will feel it in the front end as the tires try to equal the rear tires in a turn. It is just like a 4wd vehicle on the road. All 4wd motor vehicles warn of driving in 4wd on dry roads. It may cause severe damage to your driveline.

The turning method works pretty good. Another thing with the turning method is to release your lock together brakes and as you turn just tap the right or the left brake a bit while moving. I have to do that at times even to get my differential to unlock.

I've found what I think is a real simple solution:
1) press forward pedal (or if your already going forward, continue) and get tractor going something like 1-5 mph
2) let off forward pedal slightly while moving 4wd level in or out of position
3) your done.
Seems that this lightens the drivetrain load enough that the gears slide easily.

I guess if you were on a steep hill, you'd have to do the same in reverse.

On my Nh 1920.. the 4wd is a pull up lever unde rthe seat. It almost never will pull straight up without either putting tranny in reverse and just starting to back up, then clutch again, and all is fine... works same if I just start to pull forward by slipping clutch, and then fully clutch.

Guess those driveline clearances on the collar are tight..

On my 2120 which is very similar to 1920, probably 50% of time I need to lift front wheels to get it out of 4WD.

This is just one of the advantages of SensiTrak on the New Holland. FWD is added and removed automatically without the lockup hassles.

I do the same thing as djradz - now it is almost second nature when going from 4wd to 2wd.
