On the D I assumed it was 4 wheel drive based on the the literature stating that it controls the power to the wheel that needs it...but when I had 2 wheels {1 on each axle}on the ground going over a pile of gravel it just sat there with the wheels in the air turning? I was able to back up and with a little momentum get over the pile,, Am I missing something or should there not be a differential lock?

others on this website (a dealer) as well as my dealer's head of maintenance both claim that is NOT supposed to happen with the new "d". this is one of my complains with the "c" - no front diff lock. the ride and power management to the non-slipping wheel(s) are the 2 biggest upgrades (in my opinion) on the new "d". if yours is not working correctly i wonder why? drive up to a pile of gravel/rock and put the bucket level - will 1 or 2 tires spin freely after you get "into the pile". mine will - i wonder if your new d will - they shouldn't.

Got the scoop from N.Dakota. The slip differential on the D is similar to what is available on cars and trucks, but because we are going so slow the 2-1 revolution ratio of the wheel in the air to the wheel on the ground is lost on traction where it is needed. Too bad we do not have the 4 wheel lock like I have on my tractor,,maybe the E will have it,,,

does that mean once the free wheel spins 2 revolutions the diff should lock?
in otherwords should there be a small delay (spinning of the free wheel) and then the diff activates and power transfered to the non spinning wheel???
or do they mean the d has the same system as a non-diff locking truck?

on my ranger 1/3 to 1/2 revolution and the diff locks.

thx

Are you saying that the 4 wheel drive system fails to recognize a spinning wheel, so it never switches power to a wheel that has traction?

No ,,as I understand it, 2 revolutions of the wheel in the air to one revolution of the wheel on the ground..

If I dive into a pile of sand, dirt or gravel my D will spin all four wheels. I use the "work" mode and it will kill the engine if I keep digging in without enough rev's.

Also it has a dream ride. No need for a cushy seat. I notice that when I am transporting from one ranch to the other with the mower a foot or so off the ground the D doesn't bounce the mower so the cables loosen up and snap. It just mushes along and rides like a baby buggy.

I'm very happy with the D. It has a different sort of passing gear in road gear. Nothing bad but different from the C.

Spinning all four wheels with the same traction is different than getting a single wheel spinning in a mud hole or whatever. It is good to hear that the TC is serving you well.

What do you mean by "different sort of passing gear in road gear"?

It seems to shift on it's own. If you take off in road gear at partial throttle and decide to go to full throttle it doesnt speed up gradually like the C did. It will jump and thrust forward when you get up some more rev's.

While my D is having warranty work the dealer lent me a C turbo with the smaller tires to use..I have gone through a tank and 1/2 mowing with it the past 2 days . The C is less sensitive when you let off cruise or the pedal but the power is less than the D. Traction is an issue, and now I know why they replaced the leaf springs and front suspension with independant units on the D. My mower is spinning slower on the C and not giving as clean a cut, must be less hydraulic volume..but I am not complaining just comparing..it was very nice of the dealer to let me use it
