John Deere 5103 w/ 512 LDR
Okay, I've finally narrowed it down to a 40 HP / 35 HP PTO tractor w/ FEL. I'm leaning toward a JD 990 or a JD 3720, but I'd like some opinions on what my other options are in other colors.

I will mostly be mowing 13 acres and need to pull a 6 foot shredder. Need a smaller frame tractor to get in and around a bunch of oaks.

I will also be pulling a 6 foot box blade to maintain my driveway and other areas.

I'm also interested in the pricing on what you guys recommend. The pricing I've got so far:

JD 990 - 4WD, R4 Tires, 300CX Loader $19,900

JD 3720 - HST, 4WD, R4 Tires, 300 CX Loader $23,900

Thanks in advance.

Here is a couple that come to mind and should be priced similarly tothe one's you have already looked at:

New Holland TC40A and TC40DA. The a model is a more basic platform while the DA is loaded. Case also markets a DX40 which is the same tractor only in red.

Massey Fergusen 1540 and 1547. Not quite a 40 hp 35 PTo but close. The 1540 just under on the PTo and 1547 a little over. These are available with many different options and are very solid tractors. Also look at AGCO ST which are the same tractors only in orange.

Kubota L4330 and L4400 are some other options. Agian, might not be exactly 40 hp with 35pto hp but close.

All of the above tractors are high quality with a broad range of dealers. Mahindra and Kioti also have tractors in this range range as well as many others. These brands can have good value. I have limited dealer presence on these so I tend to look at the brands that have long established dealers like the above mentioned models. My favorites from the above list are the New Hollands and Massey's, but all are well made machine's

Good luck.

The Kioti DK 35 and 40 are both very nice tractors. The 40 has rear remotes, draft control, synchro shuttle with 8 fr and 8 r., decent pump capacity at 12.1 gpm, weighs in at 3800 lbs.
The JD 990 was the first tractor on my list when I started shopping, didn't like that hump in the middle of the floor where the gear shift is, didn't like the price either compared to the other brands of tractors. Its basic design has probably made it problem free and that's a big plus as far as I'm concerned. The price of $19,900 with FEL was about the same price that I was quoted.

I'm with Oleozz, before I bought my DK35 I almost bought the JD990. The Kioti just seemed like a better deal and I was happier with the service department at the Kioti dealer.

If you have a Mahindra dealer nearby, check out the 4110 (link to spec sheet). I'm very pleased with my 2615 4WD and have heard lots of good things about the 4110.

Good luck,

Thanks for the ideas.

I may go look at a Mahindra, there's a dealer about 35 miles from here.

I'd really like to look closely at the Massey, but the closest dealer is about 90 miles away. Problem?

It bothers me that the Kioti dealers around here aren't really "tractor" dealers. I can buy Kioti at the feed store and at a mini-storage. Neither of which has anything resembling a service or parts department.

New Holland is still on my list, as well. I may re-visit the TC40s.

Thanks, guys. Any idea on the price differences?

CWP37,

Hopefully you will never need anything but normal wear & tear parts. My dealer is an established "Tractor" dealership with a full service dept, and is 12 miles away. I do not think i would have bought from a tiny roadside dealer. I shopped the 30 hp market and really liked the Kubota Grand L series, but there was a "dealer only " finance issue, so i walked away from the deal. Pricewise, the Deere and New Holland were pretty high on the list, with Mahindra & Branson in the middle. The Branson makes a really nice 35hp, but at the time you could only get warranty service from the dealer you bought from, so that knocked them out.
All in all, a local dealer that you have confidence in, is most likely as important than the color you buy. Before you close the deal see if you can get them to throw in a free delivery and your first 50hr service. I have been very happy with both the tractor and the dealer, and when i thought hard about it i found that wanted to support my local dealer. You will be supprised at all the "littlte" stuff that your going to add on, plus lose when you are out there playing...er ah working /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif!

I have to go with the Kioti DK35, 40 or the Mahindra 4110. All three very good, dependable tractors. Have a talk with those Kioti folk, as you may be surprised at what service they may be able to provide. Looks are deceiving in everything.
When I bought from my dealer, he didn't have a lot going on, had just gotten into the tractor sales, but could fix you right up. Now, he has what anyone would consider a dealership, with tractors and several brands of lawnmowers, zeroturns, yard equipment etc.
Not sure of the pricing on the Mahindra, but the others are in the same range.

When I was buying I had it narrowed down to the JD 990 and the Kubota L4400 based on specs, price and the quality of the local dealers.

The L4400 has a little more hp, slightly better specs on the loader and was a little less expensive. (I paid $19,200 which included a $700 rear remote). I went with the Kubota mostly due to the 3 year 0% financing that was available at the time. The 4400 and the JD 990 are very comparable. I'd give the L4400 a serious look especially if you have a good Kubota dealer nearby.

I wrote a review of the L4400 but it does not compare it to other tractors (please pardon the typos):

Which of these will handle round bales? Any with the loader? Or do you have to use the 3ph?
