We bought this pan to do the hydraulic service - roughly 14 Gal...

Amazon.com: FloTool 428MI Hopkins 428 Crude Control Oil Drain Pan - 58 Quart: Automotive

The ability to lift it and then drain to cans is why we went this way.

Never had the chance to use it because we sent the tractor to the dealer to have a FEL fitted and while it was there, had them to do the service.

Tractor was 14 years old with 200 hours on the clock at the time but had never had the hydraulics serviced. We felt it was time! Not because of the clock but the amount of time it sat. It was in a controlled atmosphere garage but still.. that's a long time. We've put 200 hours on the machine in the last 2 years and it is going well. We try to do all our own maintenance on it as the dealer is an hour away. We hope to get a trailer that will allow us to take it for service to save the pick/delivery costs should it need to go to the dealer. We think we can handle most of the repairs and maintenance ourselves with the help of this forum.

ive always done my own service on my DK45. i use a large basin like pictured above. place used oil back in the same cans the new oil came out of. our local dump takes the oil for free (do this as a service to prevent ahol** from dumping it and leaching into the lake). i always purchase a set of filters from my local dealers (even though Amazon offers cheaper...but i keep seeing so many fake chinese rpioff products on amazon im worried about these). no way id pay a grand to service my tractor.

but if a person didnt feel good about servicing their own unit, thats fine too. i have gotten so i dont service my work truck anymore, as the local quick lube does it so cheap it not worth my time. they use good quality penzoil or quaker oil products. i wish they would do tractors.

had to go to local dealer to get a hst return spring for my tractor. i could not determine part # from shop manual, so i let them look into it. he went thru evert manual and he could not see it either. i brought in old part and we found it...its mislabeled as a brake spring. go figure. i felt bad cause he spent so much time looking up a $8 part. so i bought a full set of filters for next change. i was pleasantly surprised that the total cost was $169.70 for air, fuel, HST, hydraulic and oil filters. Amazon and ebay had the set for $174+. it isnt often that local dealer can match online.

Rademamj1 and Everyone Else,

Thank you for the great DIY advice! Rademanmj1 your reply was especially appreciated for its detail.

I upgraded my computer two weeks ago and the new OS apparently decided notifications from tractorbynet.com were junk mail - and also removed my "junk mail" folder - so I didn't see all these replies earlier. I fixed those two annoyances, and so, heartened by the "you can do it" encouragement here, I WILL save myself the $800 and tackle the 400 hour service on my Kiot DK40. I watched some YouTube videos that were helpful these past two weeks. None specifically for my model about the front axle change, but close to it. Several on the hydraulic fluid change.

Regarding the various levels of distrust towards dealerships expressed...I began my post by mentioning I have some about mine (based on my latest lawn mower repair - didn't mention why in that post) doing the work they say they do. IF I find that my filters are still "painted on" as they may have been at the factory I will know this same dealership did not do the 50 hour comprehensive new tractor service I paid $900 for five years ago.

I'm in a muscle car forum and on the subject of distrusting repair shops, somebody said they take several photographs of their car after parking at the dealership. This to prove that any damage is the fault of the shop. Somebody else nicks their oil filter so they can tell if it was changed. This last because to keep the warranty the oil and filter has to be changed every six months, no matter how few miles it may have been driven.

I live in Northern Kentucky and don't plan on using my tractor for months. It's inside a heated garage (doubles as my man cave) so I'm lucky to be able to do this in relative comfort and at my own pace.

Thanks again,

Rhino
