4000 Series manuals, did anyone download them?

/ 4000 Series manuals, did anyone download them? #11
Hmm - just checked JDParts.... For my 4600, the CD pricing would be:

---------------------------------

Operators Manual CD-ROM -- $30.00 --
OMLVU11184CD 4500, 4600 & 4700 Compact Utility Tractors English/Spanish

Parts Catalog CD-ROM -- $40.00 --
PC2693CD 4500, 4600 and 4700 Compact Utility Tractors English

Technical Manual CD-ROM -- $65.00 --
TM1679CD 4500, 4600, & 4700 Compact Utility Tractors English

----

That makes it $135.00 to get the manuals. Based on that, what would be worth the purchase? All three? Any thoughts?

-Bob

(still would be nice to be able to download them for free, though... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif)

Bob, I guess it depends on how much you want to know about the tractor and whether or not you think you might be doing any work on it yourself, but that price for all 3 is about what I paid for only two: the Workshop Manual and the Illustrated Parts List for for my Kubota (it came with the Operator's Manual. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes, again in my opinion.

For parts I use JDParts. That way it is always up to date and free. In our Dodge dealership, all parts and service info is now online, and printed manuals are gone...

Bird - I don't mind doing the basic service work (changing oil, filters, etc.) by myself - the major items I'd still take to the Dealer as 1) I don't have the time, and 2) I'm not that mechanically inclined. (there! I admit it!)

I think I'll probably buy them to have on-hand either way. The JDParts stuff is nice as the parts explosions go a long way to showing are things are put together.

Mike - is the parts manual the same as what we find in JDParts? (on-line)?

Thanks!

No, it can't be as good. A parts manual would be correct at time of printing. But there is no allowance for supersedence in the part numbers or the diagrams. If you go to the dealer, they are using an online catalog (jdparts)

JDParts also has prices, and you can check your dealers' inventory.

$40 probably won't break you, but why pay for an inaccurate book, when you can get the latest and greatest for free?

I don't have the service manual. I probably should get it, but so far the diagrams on JDParts have served me well.

I would suppose that eventually the older models will no longer be listed on JDParts. But maybe if they are no longer listed, many of the parts may no longer be available then except the parts that are comon to the newer models.

You could wait until then to get the parts manual, however, the parts manual on CD might go away then too!

It would be nice to have them as backup if you plan to keep the tractor for a while.

For anybody with a tractor whose manuals are still on-line, it might be a good idea to download the electronic files and squirl them away!

Maybe TBN could get permission to have an electronic manuals archive from some of the manufacturers if the manufacturers don't want to pay for the disk space and bandwidth to keep them on their sites.

Knowing the size of these manuals in PDF, I don't think storage for Deere is an issue.

I will buy CD copies of them, however, so I'm not out either way.

I have the owners manual for a 4400 Deere that I downloaded before they removed them from the site. It is in Adobe pdf format (you'll need acrobat reader) and I would need to email it as a zipped file (you'll need WinZip to extract). If anyone wants it, drop me an email.

Randy ("Hoss") -

Just emailed you concerning the electronic version of the manuals - thanks!
