The Toro is still built by MTD though...right? Compare the Toro (MTD) to a Huskee (MTD) at TSC or a White Outdoors (MTD) or to a Yard Machines (MTD) or to a Bolens (MTD)
**********.
Add to the above-Wards PowerCraft (MTD).
All the same thing except for paint and label.
I've got a powerCraft I'll take $600 for.

Thanks all for your comments. Actually, last night I had concluded that more steel & more HP on a commercial-grade engine are what I need to hold up. Simplicity's deck just isn't going to cut it (no pun intended). While I still think that the Deere X340 is very solidly built with the same two requirements, I do agree with you that why should I pay about $500 more for it? Because it's green and yellow?

Decision done. I'll buy the GT2554.

Cutting season here in Alabama starts in 3-4 weeks. I'll let you know how things go.

Oak.

Yes, LBrown before you mention it,
1*I think I've come to realize that this level of power is probably all I need....

2*Still, I may go with the other 3 I mentioned, but this was quite a surprise.
1* For this I would Compare :
JD X300 Series
Smplicity Broadmore
CC 1500 Series

2*For this I would Compare:
JD X500 Series
Simplicity Prestige
CC 2554

I would stay away from the MTD labels Hard and I noted.
If you are going that route I saw 2 JD tractors over at Lowes yesterday for under $1700.

Congratulations.

I feel you made the best decision.
You started out wanting a lawn tractor or a light duty garden tractor for not over $4000.oo .
You moved up to a regular garden tractor and got it for 300 dollars less than the $4000 you anticipated to spend on just a lawn tractor or light duty garden tractor.
Ya done great.

Excellent...Good luck with your Cub! Make sure your dealer will stand behind it...

Just took delivery of the GT2554. Not only did my dealer deliver to me on the spot, I got another $100 off ($3600, including tax and delivery). Can't wait for the grass to start growing.

Can someone explain to me why the rear tires on the Cub GT2554 are SMALLER than those on the GT1554?

A little premature, but went out and cut the weeds which are groing (like weeds). Seems like a whole lot of power and am so glad I went with a 54" deck (and not a 50"). Bad first start, however. I didn't have the oil dipstick snapped (there's a snapping sound when it's shut tight) tight, and over my bumpy areas almost all of the crankcase oil had spilled out onto the block, cover, etc. Nice. Oil light went on to let me know there was a low pressure oil problem. Also, the cotter pin which holds the reverse pedal arm came off and the reverse pedal was suddenly flush with the ground. Not sure what happened there, but that was corrected, too.

Hopefully, these are flukes.

In any case, thanks for steering me in the GT direction.

Oak.

How much smaller are they? The GT1554 is designed to be a cheap alternative Cub Cadet to sell at Home Depot and TSC while the GT2554 is designed for the Cub Cadet dealers. So if the 1554 tires are bigger it is only for a selling tip when comparing it to other tractors at TSC/Home Depot.
