Buying Advice 4120 sufficient MX6 cutter/KK 72"tiller?

If you're cutting 1 inch or smaller pieces, I would reconsider the RC2072. The MX6 weighs 350 - 400# more than the 2072 requiring not just more ballast, but also causing more pitching motion of the tractor over uneven terrain. The faster blade tip speed of the MX6 will give a better cut potentially, but my 2072's cut has been excellent. The heavier and longer your rear attachment, the more it affects ride despite adequate front end ballast, something I've seen with my shorter 3038e and the RC2072.

Your 4120 should have no difficulty powering either hog. I've had no problem whatsoever powering a 6' hog with 5 fewer PTO hp than your tractor, and considerably less operating torque.

I have a 4320 and MX6. It works well in 90% of the conditions I find myself in. It wouldn't hurt to have a little more HP on occasion, but having said that, it works fine for all but the thickest grass. If you encounter this, you just have to take it down a gear...

As for the Frontier vs the MX-6, definitely go with the MX6. The MX-6 is a very heavy mower and is about all the 4000 series frame wants to handle, but it's built MUCH stouter than the frontier. Been there, done that.... :D

As for the bottom line, I think you will be fine with the 4120/MX6 combination.

Are these prices fair?

2012 4120 ehydro R4 tires 3rd (rear) SCV $25900

400cx loader $5300

Skid steer attachment with 72" hvy-duty bucket. $700

Mx6 cutter $2275 (after JD $500 rebate)

Total package $34175

What would be a fair market price? Thanks for everyone's input.

List on the tractor and loader you listed on JD build your own is 35,977.
MX 6 Cutter is 3,059
Total MSRP is 39,036 less 1,000 for two attachments is 38,036.
Your total quote is 34,175 so you are at 10% less MSRP for the package. Around 15% off is what you are shooting for.

You probably have another $1,500 or so to get out of him to get at 15% less list on the tractor and loader. It's a little harder to get more off on the cutter. So don't think you are getting robbed here, he's not quoting list.

I'll try to make a long story short. I bought a 2007 4120 power-reverser, 400x loader, with 720 hours on Dec 31, 20111. After the first time I used it (for 1.5 hours idling in my front yard cutting wood) in late January I noticed trans/hyd oil leaking out of the bell housing, and also the rf axle seal leaking badly. I called the dealer and he said that was to bad but I bought it "as-is". After several phone calls they offered to split the cost of fixing the trans leak(at their shop) but not the axle seal. I brought the tractor to them, to check it out, they called me back and said it would be at least 3 grand for the cheapest repair but possibly more once they split the tractor open. I was also given the opportunity to trade the tractor back on a new one. But any quote I was given was about $1500 to $2000 higher than surrounding dealers prices. The dealer told me this was because I was trading with him rather than buying straight-out(no trade). I checked with an independent repair shop and he thought it would be a trans input seal and he quoted about $550 to fix. After unsuccessfully trying to get a better trade price I decided to go get the tractor and fix it on my own. Does anyone think I'm wrong in not wanting to business with that dealership anymore, or was I treated fair?

I would say them trying to saying they need to split at $3000, you paying $1500 and then finding out that an independent repair place can do the same repair for $550 would not be fair. Did he know about the problem before selling it? Doesn't seem like he wants your business to me , I'd go elsewhere.

Am I reading this right.

You bought a tractor. 4 years later it has a leak and you think that is the dealers fault???

If you indeed only had a $550 problem and they were trying to charge 3k....well that is a little high. But yet again, we are only hearing one side of the story. How you approach a dealer with a problem is key. If you act all big-and-bad and act like its their fault and want them to fix it for nothing, then they arent going to be very cost friendly to work with.

Not saying this is the case, but all too often on TBN, we see these threads. And it is really hard to judge without hearing the other side of the story.
