Tiller 42 in hydraulic tiller on a 445

Please help, I have a JD 445 with a 42 inch hydraulic tiller on the rear. I have tried everything from the 3pt hitch to adding shoes on the side to get the depth correct. Some people say you need to keep adjusting the depth with the hydraulics. It seems to me that this would not give you a smooth garden. Can someone please give me some advice on how to adjust my tiller.

That pump on the side is always going to leave a furrow. That is one thing i dislike about the old 30 tillers. Your tiller should have shoes, raise them to the highest position and drive as straight as you can. There's not much else you can do.
