No success after changing the thermostat.

Could a bad coolant temperature sensor be the issue?

Could there be a head gasket leak into the coolant?

There could very well be a head gasket issue. I suspect that at some point, it would bubble into the plastic reservoir and cause the temp gauge to go up. Might lose a cylinder as it develops.

The last time that I changed a fuel filter on my 4300, I had trouble starting it. Turns out that the shut off valve slipped internally when I opened it. Might be worth taking the shut off valve apart and checking to see if it is either partially closed or if there is some foreign matter clogging it. I know that the fuel filter was changed as part of the initial troubleshooting but wnooitge didn't mention if it appeared to be in dire need of changing. Perhaps he got a load of dirty fuel and it needs another filter.

Another possibility is the secondary air filter. It's pretty easy to check the primary filter by placing a trouble light inside it, but the secondary filter is small enough to make it difficult to tell if it is clogged. I would expect the filter minder to show red if it isn't getting enough air, though.

Another problem that I've had with the mid frame compact is the brakes hanging up. When the problem happens again, block the wheels front and back and crawl under the tractor and tap the brake actuator arms back with a hammer. If there is movement, it might be a good idea to check the return springs and loosen the adjustment a half turn on both sides. Use some penetrating oil to lube the shafts where they go through the housing and work the brakes back and forth until they are free. Don't forget that one of the jam nuts on the turnbuckle (the front if memory serves) is left hand thread. When the brake on mine hung up, the symptoms were similar to those described in the original post.

I just had to remove and flush the tank out. It may not solve your problem but I spent needless money on injectors, Fuel lines, I almost bought a new injector pump? Luckily I found the real problem before I did that .It just it might be a cost free thing to try. My neighbor is a diesel Mech, He said that 95% of all problems are fuel or air related. Hope it helps?

Boris1,

How did you go about flushing the fuel tank?

Jim_Fisher,

I changed both the primary and secondary air filters. The tractor started up with no problem after I changed the fuel filter. The fuel filter didn't look any worse for wear and I only found fine sediment at the bottom of the bowl.

I'll make sure to check the breaks.

Thanks for the suggestions.
