I'd want to look up specs to be sure, but that seems like it should be a reasonable speed for a saw blade of similar diameter.
The biggest problems I see are the limited depth of cut, and keeping the blade sharp enough.

My radial arm saw runs around 3450 RPM. I have a large blade for a cutoff saw that is rate for 5000 RPM max. Is there a blade of the same diameter as the stump grinder that will cut fast enough if run at 660?
J_J said:Bob, I have an early 90's trencher/stump grinder with non replaceable teeth. It digs a nice trench, and chews up stumps equally. You don't have to be that fast, but must have sharp teeth. The blade can not be reversed. It is built on to the tapered shaft. I would rather have the bolt on blade, and bolt on teeth.
BobRip said:I have the same or similar unit. I don't think the present blade needs to be fast, but if you put a wood cutting blade on wouldn't if have to be reasonably fast? My experience with wood cutting circular blades comes from table saws and radial arm saws. Larger ones may be different.

I guess the situation would have to depend on the power applied and rpm.
My stump grinder takes 3/4 in swipes every time it contacts the wood. A thinner blade at higher rpm, with 1/4 in teeth might do just as well.
BobRip said:J_J, my stump grinder cuts a 1.5 inch swipe. I wonder if they changed it. Mine was built around 2000. I have always felt it cut too wide for the power available. You have to cut very slowly and really be right on the edge of stall for maximum cut rate.
I understand about the speed, that's what really affects the cut rate. My blade cannot be changed easily or I would give this a try.
