Tractor
PT 425
(rewording prior post)

I never heard of the Power-trac tractor until I came to this site. It is very interesting. I was about to get a 7510/20 Kubota with a front loader and a pull behind mower. I already have 24 hp Simplicity lawn tractor with a bagger that I am keeping.

I am looking to move 25-30 yrds of mulch, about 10-15 yds of top soil and about 10 yds of gravel each year. Will also have to do grading and scraping. I have a 3 acre lawn. The lawn has some small rolling landscape but mostly flat. I also live in hurricane country and still have lots of large trees (60 footers) that will someday come down. So I would like to pick them up after cutting them.

In reading some of the PT problems, I note that they are solved by "ordering right". Like the right tires ... What I would really appreciate is your advice on whether the Power-trac is the right one for me and if yes, then which options would you recommend. THANKS!!

By the way, what is the 4 in 1 bucket?

Whether Power-Trac is the right tractor for you is a personal matter. If you haven't already done so, look at the Power-Trac website and the variety of equipment they manufacture. They have lots of great features, but they are not the same as what most people think of as a "tractor". I visited the factory myself a couple of years ago and it's quite impressive. Their machines are quicker and easier to change implements on the front end and quite versatile, but they don't have a "tractor" type PTO on the back end; made to work almost entirely with the front end, etc. Great machine for some users and not good for others. Can't you say that about almost any machine? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Take the ten point PT suitability test. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

1. Do you tend not to follow the crowd?

2a. Can you fix most things yourself?

Or

2b. Are you rich enough to have a private mechanic on retainer? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

3. Will you never need to plow a field or otherwise need to use an implement that requires a 3 point hitch or conventional PTO? (may be ignored if you also own a CUT)

4. Can you stand having to pay twice what CUT owners would pay for equivalent implements?

5. Are certain you won't care about the clanking sound that your PT and mower will always make that your neighbors will certainly hear every time you mow.? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

6. Do you really not care if you don't have a brake pedal?

7. Are you tired of product manuals that provide endless warnings and are obviously written by lawyers? (there is a catch here) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

8. Do you own an air compressor? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

9. Can you retain your dignity and not fall down laughing when you are asked, "What's that thing behind your mower?" /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

10. Can you depend upon people you have never met for tech support, especially when you consider they probably meet criteria 1 thru 9 above? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If you can answer yes to all of the above, you just may be suitable for PT ownership. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Just in case you are wondering, this is tongue in cheek....well, sort of. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Edit: Reworded the plowing question.

I think I flunked the test....

Uh oh. Which part? I reworded one of the questions. Maybe that was it.

Is number four backwards?

Price any one of these attachments (and the necessary hydraulics and controls) for a normal CUT, in comparison to a PT:

1. Front end loader
2. 6-way power angle blade
3. Grapple bucket
4. Mini-hoe
5. 60" finish mower

IMO, each of these attachments is MUCH cheaper for a PT...

Why don't we try these in reverse. These are the attachments for a PT that are more expensive:

1. Rough cut mower
2. Post hole digger
3. Potato digger

I'm sure there may be others, but these were the ones that came to mind quickly...

Also, keep in mind:
(1) that $150-$175 of each PT attachment is in the cost of the Quick Attach -- which almost all CUTs do not have except for changing loader buckets....
(2) the PT also has the equivalent of a hydraulic toplink builtin, with the ability to tilt the QA plate and the entire attachment. These are an expensive option for a normal CUT, when you consider the cost of the hydraulics and control for the toplink...

I agree that PT prices are much better. I am still confused by the wording of question 4. Never mind.

Comment: By reusing the front lift arms over and over for each attachment, PT saves a lot of manufacturing cost. A simple bucket for other tractors can be $4000. About 10 times PT's price. One of the things that makes PT so useable is that you can actually justify buying an attachment that you don't use many times a year. None of my neighbors have a stump grinder, trencher or grapple bucket.

60" finish mower TSC $1,095.76 PT $1400.00 + shipping

5' box blade TSC $393.93 PT $480.00 + shipping (only 4' BB from PT)

Boom pole TSC $86.82 PT $300.00 + shipping

5' tiller TSC $1,154.94 PT $1150.00 + shipping (only 4' tiller from PT)

CUT owners generally don't have to pay shipping. PT owners do, unless they live close enough to the factory. Most don't.

Power Trac may "reuse" the lift arms, but CUTs always "reuse" the 3ph. Comparison wise, it's a wash.

The four thousand dollar bucket made me laugh. I guess you are talking about the price of a complete front end loader. For four grand, it would be a lot bigger than a PT-425's loader. It has been pointed out many times, the only fair way to compare the base price of a PT with something else is compare both machines with loaders attached. Since it is common for CUT dealers to offer tractor/loader package prices, all that is needed is to add the price of a bucket to the PT's base, then compare.

But you can't then claim that a bucket costs $4000 for a CUT.
