I know chains have been discussed alot in the past, but I couldn't find anything directly related to the 15.00-19.5 r-4's on the JD
4300/4400.

Is anyone currently using store bought chains in the above application? I'm not abitious enough to make my own. The only place I could find that size was tirechains.com; my dealer said they couldn't find anything to fit that r-4 tire.

Would the size on tirechain.com fit? I'll contact the company to see what they say, but would prefer 1st hand experience if there is some out there. There may even be another brand tractor that uses the same tire. Any info would be appreciated.

I would prefer not to place the order, then have to send them back because they don't fit.

butzkeg,

These guys are pretty knowledgeable. I would trust what they say. When I shopped for my chains, I stopped at dealer who specializes in chains in our area and basically the chains sold for tractors are the same as the chains sold for large trucks.

Is you concern the distance between the tire and the fender or just getting the wrong size?

OBTW, I got mine from Tirechains.com. They forgot to ship me my binders for my front tires. I called them up and had them the next day. A good outfit to work with.

Just getting the wrong size.

Plus, I've had too many experiences with places not cooperating for return of products (in general). I wouldn't want to hear that it was my fault for ordering the wrong size, and have to spend extra $ to correct my error.

Sounds like they're OK, so I'll just give 'em a call. Thanks Terry.

The concern I had on my 4300 R-4's (same size as yours) was the tight space between side wall and fender, even when the rims were at the widest spacing (gained about an inch when turned). I could not find a chain for the tire (did not try tirechain.com) that did not come down the side of the tire so that is the reason I made my own. In the design, I lengthened the side chain and shortened the cross chain, so the side chain would ride in the depression (dip) at the ends of the lugs. They work great, after much concern on my part that they might slip off (over) the tire. With all the deep snow and thick ice we had last winter, their performance was 100%. If you want the cross chain length, I could get that for you. The chains are not on yet this year - infact, the plow isn't even on yet (that may happen in the morning).

Butzkeg,

I hope you get this before you call Tirechains.

Tell them about your concern with the R4s and the clearances. They may have a recommendation as to another type of chain. Heck, it's their dime. Just fire away with the questions.

I may wait for a few more days, to read any more tips. No large amounts of snow in the forcast right now.

The driveway was pretty slick the other day, then we got 6" of snow. It was difficult to go up even the small hills when pulling snow.

Butzkeg,

Yep, I had the same problem with my JD4100 and the R4s. One thing that I did notice was that if I increased the engine speed, I had less slippage with the tires. With the FEL, I would float the blade which seemed to help some. With the rear blade, I had to adjust the rockshaft to relieve the pressure on my skid shoes. Those little things made a bit of difference.

I have not used my chains yet. Maybe tomorrow, we're supposed to have somewhere between 4-8" of snow in our area (near Hagerstown, MD). Just have to wait and see.... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

butzkeg, I have a 4300 with the R4 tires for which I ordered chains from Tirechains.com. When I first installed the chains they would occasionally rub on the clutch linkage rod on the right side of the tractor. After tightening the chains down a little tighter I have not had any trouble in the last 4 or 5 hours that I have plowed with the tractor. By the way the chains that I ordered were, I believe, the cheapest ones that they offer for that size tire.
